Not sure I understand the NHS part, would be like us celebrating Medicare - very odd.

^ oh yes, oh my... :D

NHS and GOSH, very mixed emotions seeing the children in the beds, these happy dancing children are so far from the reality of a child sick in the hospital.

Great Britain were one of the first to introduce a universal health care system so to equate the NHS to Medicare is a little bit of a stretch.

GOSH is the Great Ormond Street Hospital, a hospital which receives royalties from J M Barrie's Peter Pan so as a package (although it wasn't my favourite part of the night) it all tied in rather nicely. I think I heard that the children on the beds were actually past and present patients of the hospital, if so I think that is great!

I am English and the whole thing made me very proud of my country of birth. I thought it was a fantastic ceremony. They were never going to try and emulate preceding ceremonies and I am glad it was so unique. Loved the previous Olympians handing the baton so to speak to the next generation of athletes to light the flames of the cauldron.

Prickly

Did anyone else pick up the Thomas the Tank Engine connection ? The 'helicopter' that 'flew' the Queen & James Bond to the ceremony was Harold from TTTE.

I found that segment to be slightly corny.

^^^I thought it a very clever way of acknowledging that there was vast disparity with their class system till that point in time. (was wondering if it embarrassed the americans there)

PS....I thought Brummel should have got 1st place ahead of Churchill.........

I found the inclusion of the NHS bit rather clunky actually. I can get why it was included I guess but I don't think it went into the program flawlessly it seemed a bit out of place. The choreography, props and so forth was great but it just didn't flow the way the earlier bits did.

I was also wondering if the American telecast would gloss over what the NHS means - in particular the specific brief it had - to not let anyone suffer ill health due to inability to pay. (I don't remember the specific words) I just don't know more than one American who actually agrees with that.

Re-watching to see the flame enter the stadium, I had to duck out at that bit earlier and didn't get back until just before the cauldron was lit. I like me a good bit of Beckham spotting torch relay.

Uh...no? I think you need to know more Americans.

I know quite a few. They have been very vocal against the notion. Because they assure me that 'no one wants Obamacare' and 'we're not socialists!' and 'it's not the government's money it's mine and I don't want it spent on everyone else' it just made me think on it is all.

Is anyone else over their kids talking all the way through the commentary you want to listen to? *headdesk*

Okies, well, maybe choose your company better, because I know dozens, and know of millions, who think it's a grand idea...me being one of them. ;)

Anyway, I rather liked the NHS part of the show.

Okay ... I'll choose my company better, thanks for that tip ...

Who else is itching for the swimming? I know it's very mainstream of me but I am all about the high profile and Australian events. Greco-Roman Wrestling and Handball doesn't do it for me, sorry ...

Mere minutes away, no? :excite:
