DS v Ipod (6 and 8 year old)

Recommended Posts

Hi There

With all the toy catalogues about I'm thinking of doing a Christmas laybuy. Think I might buy my kids their first bit of technology but unsure what to get. At this stage I'm thinking iPod touch for DD (8) and DS for DS (6), does this sound most appropriate for their ages? Also I know absolutely nothing about the DS's and what the different types are. What do you recommend and why? Thinking of just going for the cheapest, but do they all take the same games? What's the difference between DS and DSi? would appreciate any advice.

Also if I do go with and iPod for DD is there a Moshi Monster game for this?

Thank you!

Al

DSi XL in Target catalogue for only $139, seems like a great price. This could be the go! Do they take all the games or only specific ones? Any reasons NOT to buy this one?

Thanks!

My 7 year old son has a DSi XL - I like the bigger screen. He also has 'stolen' my ipod and uses that regularly (probably more than the DSi). There are heaps of games that can be dowloaded free or very cheap on the ipod - usually around .99c. If given the choice, my son would prefer to play with the ipod over the DSi. However, the screen is so much smaller and I carefully watch him for tiredness or eye strain! The XL takes all DS games.

My pick would be the DSi and his would be the ipod!

I have kids (6) and (9) and we have both. They seem to prefer spending more time playing the ipod, although they do swap between both.

The problem with the DS is the cost of the games. You would save the difference between the DS and Ipod just on cost of games alone.

Don't know about your house but I couldn't get away with buying the kids something different, one would always want what the other has. If they're great at sharing you would have the best of both worlds, but that doesn't happen here.

I don't know which way I'd go positives for both, I think the games are probably better more involved in the DS but the Ipods games a cheap or free..

I would go the iPad I have one but for some reason all 5 kids live on it. From ages 4 to 12?

Sky landers is a huge hit even with hubby. Reaching games lotsssss of educational stuff and of course angry birds.

iPods are better than DS's in this house. Cheaper games, less to lose - stylus, game cartridges.

We have my old DS available to the girls (almost 6 and just turned 7) and DS1 (turning 9 tomorrow) has had a DSi for a couple of years. They all were given iPod touches last Christmas and haven't put them down since. On the other hand, I couldn't even tell you where the DS was, and the DSi hasn't been used in so long the charger is missing.

iPods all the way in this house - even my 23 month old has a play on my old iPhone given the chance.

I would go with the Ipods.

While the initial outlay may be expensive, as a PP has said, you can get games, mostly for free, some for .99cents or $1.99.

Games for the DS are expensive, like $40ish each.

My boys have both DS's and Ipods. The DS's NEVER get played with anymore.

There is so much more to choose from App wise for the Ipods.

Just another thing to remember, when I bought my eldest his Ipod, I went the cheapest option and bought 8GB. It is nearly full.

So when I bought my youngest his DS, we went with the 32GB. Loads of room :)

iPods. So many cheap options for newgames. Also does music and camera so very versatile. My kids are 6 and 8 and have had them a few years now and very rarely do the ds come out.

We have both and three children aged 6-13, the iPod's win hands down. I also love not spending a fortune on games!

Another vote for iPods. My two eldest have them and all the games they use have been free, plus they both love listening to music. On our recent trip to Fiji and on long car rides I load each of them with their favourite movies that they watched with head phones.. no arguing over movie selection.

iPods or iPads.

The games are cheap, you can download story books and educational games.

Though I love Angry Birds :D

I was going to give another vote for iPod, but the verdict is fairly obvious!!

I will say though, if you can afford it, go the iPad.

.Jerry.

iPod for sure.

The DS is purely for entertainment, with games costing over $20 usually.

The iPod can be used for so much more. Games, education, photos, music, video, internet...

Apps are either free or quite cheap.

iPod!

My DS1 is 3.5yr and he plays with the DS and my old Iphone is now the 'kids' Iphone, I would probably say Iphone is better for the younger child and DS for the older child. There is so many things you can do with an Iphone/Ipod touch, all the apps and we also have videos loaded on our.

My kids have had DS's for years and only recently I bought an Ipod. Ipod wins hands down. It is MUCH more cost - effective. So many apps etc available free, and even the paid ones are cheap and often go free for a while. You can get fantastic cases to protect the ipod (worth paying out for an expensive case).

Im not sure if you can get the gumdrop case for ipod - but I have it for ipad and it makes the ipad virtually indestructable (I have seen paintballs shot at the screen and it doen't break in the gumdrop case - but DOES break in another expensive case.

If I went with the ipod I would totally disable internet on it. All my stepsons friends used them to look at porn (this was in primary school) and their parents were clueless.
