Book Suggestions for 13yo Boy

Recommended Posts

Mrs Twit

I'm after some book suggestions for DS just turned 13.

He is currently on the last book in the John Flanagan series Brotherband which he has particularly enjoyed along with the Rangers Apprentice series.

Other books series he has enjoyed are Harry Potter, Divergent, The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner

Thanks!

Lady Door

Fantasy recs

Holly Black and Cassandra Clare's Magisterium series.
Dark Blade - Steve Feasey
The Contender series - Taran Matharu
Skulduggery Pleasant - Derek Landy

Neal Shusterman's Scythe series is absolutely brilliant but as the books go on (a trilogy) they probably get a bit more mature in themes.

Dystopian recs

Mark Smith (australian author) - The Road to Winter trilogy
Monument 14 series by Emmy Laybourne

I have read all these myself and work in a secondary school library and these are some of our most popular, particularly with boys.

This and he also has another book that is due out soon called To sleep in a sea of stars which looks great.

Sarah J Mass's Throne of Glass series might be a good match too. Also Lani Taylor and the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series (first book is called this).

OK great thanks. I am keeping a list of all of these suggestion. I am trying to reserve a whole lot of books online for everyone from the library. We are in VIC so the library is closed. They will deliver but there is a couple of weeks wait and a limit of 10 books :(. Oh well. We might have to see what my DDs school library has as she can reserve there and pick up in person.

I did try to tell him to read slower...

The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper. MC is a teenage boy around that age. Great series.

I managed to get from DD's school library last day before the lockdown began Tomorrow When The War Began which he really enjoyed and wants to read the next ones in the series. I also got the first 2 books in the Skulduggery Pleasant series of which he is part way through the first one and enjoying it. I have other books from the suggestions above reserved with our local library which I can pick up when they open again.

So big thank you to everyone for your suggestions. I have taken a copy of them all and we will work through them as available. It's great to have so many suggestions and for him to widen his range of books.

@EPZ I have the Power of One here - I never thought of that. I will chuck it his way.

Keeper of the lost cities series is excellent (and they are long so they will keep him going a while).

percy Jackson and pretty much all the Rick Riordan books were enjoyed by my boys.

gregor the outlander series is good and also by Suzanne Collins but not as mature as Hunger Games.

Would he enjoy reading Sherlock Holmes?

I remember enjoying them at around that age.

Fantasy recs.

He'd likely enjoy Jim Butcher Furies of Alera series. Book 1 is a bit slow but pace much better from Book 2.

And Steve Brust Vlad Taltos series.

Both are male protagonist. The Alera series is also coming of age for Tavi who is about 14 when the book starts.

And David Eddings Belgariad, or Sparhawk series' are likely of interest too. Or Raymond Feist Magician. Book 1 is a great standalone.

Not helpful on recommendations, and potentially not practical due to the cost, but a kobo e-reader allows library borrowing of e-books. Just thought I'd mention it because it may get around the waiting and access issues.
