I like Alfie for a toddler young child but not an adult male

I can't decide if I like Alfred or not

Yes I like it. Alfred is a little awkward but the adult Alfie could also choose Alf or Fred.

My grandfather was Alfred (Alf)

Alfie is ok for a baby, young child. Not so sure about Alfred though

Alfred is fine.   NN Alf and Alfie when little.

Alfred is a hard name to take on...maybe Frederick? Or Arthur? George? Ime nick names often just happen, so I wouldn’t think too much about the nn when deciding on a name, we thought ds might get a common nickname that goes with his name, but he never did, his full name suits him so well

Sorry, but I don't like either name.  You asked for honesty.

I know a couple of little Alfies. I think it's a nice name and, as other have pointed out, he can always go with Fred if he prefers.

Lovely.
I much prefer Alfred "Alfie" rather than just Alfie. Alfie is so cutesy.
We thought about using Alfred but having Fred as the nickname.

Not a huge fan of Alfred, but I like Alf/Alfie as NN.

What about Ralf?

This is me exactly - I love Alfie but I don’t think it works for an adult and I’m not mad on Alfred. I have this on my maybe list for DS at the moment.

I love it but biased as my 5 year old is Alfred, usually known as Alfie.

My friend has a 6 year old Alfred, and I remember being slightly surprised by her choice when he was born. He was a dear little Alfie as a toddler, and also starting calling himself Fred. Now at school he is Fred or Freddie and gosh I love his name now. Its a great name.

My best friend here has an Alfred/Alfie, who just turned 4. Like a previous poster when I first heard she called him Alfred, I was taken aback as it sounded like such an old man name. He totally suits Alfie now but I cannot even think of him as an Alfred. And I don't think I could take seriously a grown man called Alfie but as others have said, there's quite a few nicknames that could spring from Alfred. Or he could just revert to Alfred when he's older. I have two little boys so I'm at some sort of playground every day and there's quite a few Alfie's out there. Just in case you're concerned about the popularity factor.

I was lobbying for Alfred for our last baby (that turned out to be a girl). I think I almost had DH over the line... Great name, varied nickname potential.

Love Alfred. Alfie is cute enough for a kid, but for an adult... not so much. I'm a big fan of formal names with nicknames though. So much more versatile.

The grown-ups are often Alf which is pretty cool.  Name in its own right too.

It’s not my cup of tea sorry but I’m a big believer in using more formal names and using a nickname from that so if you did go ahead definitely Alfred/Alfie.
