Sister for Oscar

If you haven't followed the recent name saga, hopefully this brings you up to date.

We found out we are expecting our first girl and have had a beautiful name picked out for years. Well after drama with in laws, we are no longer naming our daughter that name. It just doesn't feel right.

Early last week we lost DH's grandfather so it might be nice to honor him in a way - his name was Bruce Albert and he was a Scot. I've suggested the name Alba as it means Scotland in Scottish Gaelic. DH isn't sure on it and we can't find many names that fit with it so we aren't tied to the idea.

We'd love some possible first and middle name suggestions!

To give you a feel for our naming style we have Oscar Milo, this baby was going to be Penelope Kate, but if she was a boy - Hamish Otto.

Our surname starts with a Y and has one syllable.

What about Alberta, Albertine or Bertie for a middle name?

If you want to honour her grandfather, maybe using the same initials would work just as well as finding a similar name?

Penelope.

#SoWhite, SIL definitely won’t steal it, being Scottish should also describe your grandfather and a protest that fits in with the current times - perfect.

Slightly more seriously- Bryce.

I love the name Claire if you are wanting to keep the same meaning as Albert. It also goes well with Oscar and Alba as a middle name.

If you decide to just choose a beautiful name, Genevieve, Evangeline or Ariella would be my picks to replace Penelope. They are common yet uncommon enough not to be chosen by SIL.

Ooh, DS1 would have been Penelope if he was a girl. I love the name :) and Oscar was the name I was pushing for for our second. Clearly you have good taste ;)

Other choices that we had;

Seraphina

Josephine (this was my second favourite after Penelope- so many good nickname options)

Angelina

Anastasia

Mackenzie (my favourite from years ago but doesnt really work well with our surname as it starts with K so seems clunky...)

Pippa

And if DS2 was a girl he would have been Mara Alice :)

How about Bridget. It is of Irish/Gaelic heritage. It kind of honours your DH's grandfather with the 'Br' sound.

Bridget Alba sounds nice

The Gaelic word for Penelope looks a lot like Fiona.

Or the name Bruce has a meaning of 'the willowlands'.

How about Willow?

Can't say I am a huge fan of Alba, but I haven't heard it a lot and never as a first name. I have heard it as a surname a few times - most famously from Jessica Alba.

How about Bridget. It is of Irish/Gaelic heritage. It kind of honours your DH's grandfather with the 'Br' sound.

Bridget Alba sounds nice

Definitely a nod to old school, traditional Scottish name.

Names that “feel similar” to Penelope for me:

Elodie

Eleanor

Genevieve

Prudence

Vivienne

Victoria

Catherine

I like Alba as a middle name, one of my daughter’s friends is an Alba and she’s an absolutely lovely kid, so definitely biased!

It’s a lot of syllables, but Catherine Penelope has a lovely rhythm, and is similar to your original thinking.

I like Alba. Also Aubrey.

Similar to Penelope but different Pernel or Peronel of Petronel - though that last one makes me think of a Patronus from HP....

~THE~MAGICIAN~

Kate is a stunning name that I would use as a first name.

Otherwise, keeping it as a middle name, with Oscar, I would use:

Bridget Kate

Charlotte Kate

Genevieve Kate

Juliet/Julia Kate

Stella Kate

Zara Kate

When I heard a child at school being yelled at “Alba” it seemed less appealing than the written form I’d come across on name forums. Kind of reminds me of albumin too, so not a great reference.

Instead of Penelope, I’d go with Cordelia. Maybe Cordelia Bryce, as a PP suggested.

Maybe Heather is another one to consider?
