Microsoft query

Hi recently I was unable to log on to my laptop without signing up for a Microsoft update to install “Activity History”.

Does this sound legitimate?

I do have Norton antivirus protection installed but I’m a bit worried that this could be a scam.

I did go into settings and disable most of the shares.

WDYT?

Thanks in advance.

I googled Microsoft activity history and got results, mostly how-tos for viewing and controlling settings.

Microsoft (Windows 10, I assume?) updates don't require signing up for anything. Are you able to post a screenshot?

Hi, thanks for your replies. Unfortunately I don't have a screen shot to post but now am worried about this.

It is Windows 10.

Any advice on what I should do? I did have anti virus protection, shouldn't this cover me for anything bad?

Sorry if I sound very naive.

DH recently had a windows 10 update where a splash screen appeared at the logon screen and wouldnt let him click past the first screen unless he clicked accept. But it let us opt out at the next screen. It was trying to encourage him to set up a microsoft account but he didnt want one.

(I work in the field so Im sure it wasn't a virus. )

Go passwordless.

Did you know—for improved security and a simple sign-in experience, you can sign in with your face, fingerprint or PIN? It’s easier than ever to enable passwordless sign-in for your Microsoft accounts: just go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options on your Windows 10 PC and select ‘On’ under ‘Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts’. Note that this is hardware dependent.

OP could it have been the above? The update above was rolled out recently.

Run your antivirus software and it might be worth downloading the program Malwarebytes and running that. It picks up a lot of unwanted programs.

Was it a sign-up or an authorisation password? My computer (Mac) asks for my password for some types of updates
