School Readiness Assessment

Recommended Posts

Behind Hazel Eyes

Ds1 is repeating preschool, the year before fyos here. He turned 5 in January this year. He was doing a lot better socially for the few weeks preschool was open this year than last. He has SN and significant delays in speech, fine motor and social skills. I flagged my concerns with his teacher at the preschool parent teacher interviews in his first year of preschool. We had another meeting at the end of term two to go through both our concerns. At that stage we spoke about the possibility of repeating. In term 3 the NSET team (dep of education field officers both OT and speech pathologists) did observations at preschool. They don't make recommendations but their report allows teachers and parents to see where the student is at. Sounds like preschool field officers might be similar. DS1 teacher, head of preschool, OT and speech pathologist all recommended repeating. But the school put an unofficial ILP in place and are focusing on the areas he is significantly behind and as soon as I can find someone with availability he'll be doing OT and speech therapy and seeing a psychologist.

DS1 first year of preschool he didn't make any friends till early term 3. He'd mostly just eat quietly on the mat then play quietly by himself. The last two terms he'd pretty much just play with his one friend.

I'd start with the teacher and see what they can do to help him socialise at kinder. Some universities have Occupational Therapy clinics which run social skills programs or run the cool kids program for anxiety which you can also do online too. And if you have preschool field officer or equivalent I'd speak to the teacher about getting referred to see them. And keep the paying a lot for a school readiness report as something to consider later in the year if your concerns havent been resolved.

I think it is a bit early in the year to do an assessment, especially if kinder is saying that also.

My DS didn't receive a report until term 4, from 4YO kinder, regarding social, emotional, learning feedback and recommendation. You shouldn't need to pay over $1000 for an assessment.
