So, Zoom and other video calling?

Recommended Posts

Which app do you use to video call?

I was able to set mum up using messenger today and I had a lovely chat with the side of her head, up her nose, her left eyebrow....

She has an older Aldi tablet and that worked a bit better as she didnt have to hold it, but the quality wasnt great and we seemed to have a lag in the sound

Is there a better app that we can use, that is relatively easy to install? - I'm going to have to talk her through setting it up. DS tells me that messenger sucks data too.

DD uses Discord but says that would just confuse her.

I have been hearing about Zoom. Is that easier ?

Love to have other recommendations

Is it a 4g or wifi tablet?

A search tells me google duo is good for low bandwidth with IMO and skype being contenders.

We use skype a lot at work and it works pretty well.

Zoom is great on poor bandwidth as well. Just make sure you send a link or put a password

What about for kids?

My yr 5 kiddo has a shared google doc that they use to chat, but teacher has said they need to shut it down as it’s against their it contract.

I’d still like a way for them to connect regularly with relative safety.

I have been finding zoom pretty good this week.

My daughter had a gymnastics lesson over Zoom yesterday, it was great!

I find Zoom good for low bandwidth.

But the best for low bandwidth has always been FaceTime. Not relevant if not Apple .

I find teams bad if the internet is slow.

And to add with zoom- do not use a backdrop with low bandwidth as it chews data.

My DD uses zoom for dancing and has found it really glitchy, but maybe it's when it's large groups?

I have used all of these for work: Zoom, webex, teams and Skype.

So far Zoom is the best, but it has a 40min time limit for the free version.

Lots of people are talking about house party but I haven't tried that one yet.

If you're looking for text chat rather than video chat, I'd suggest Slack.

FB messenger video call. Holding the phone up. DS had a long virtual playdate with that the other day, it was awesome.

We use Zoom for work but I find it glitchy - at least one of us usually has no sound. Maybe it's better if only 2 ppl though.

I have never used FaceTime. Skype can be OK but quality is patchy too.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, its wifi and yep low bandwith nbn.

I will have a look at Zoom and see if its super easy to use.

She is kinda used to messenger as she sends messgaes that way already, just usually through her PC. It was just really lagging today.

Oh lord - I had to talk my mother through reconnecting the modem on Friday (thank goodness for SIL keeping a picture of the connections for us all to use), I shudder to think what getting her to install anything would require.

My sister very helpfully set Dad up with facetime - so she can talk to him, at least.

Zoom is what my DDs Uni is using for lectures.

I used it on Thursday night for a meeting & it kinda glitched a couple times but for the most part it was OK.

If the tablet isn't powerful enough, she could get a phone stand, or prop it up somehow so she doesn't have to hold it.

We just use facetime when talking one on one. I think WhatsApp has video as well, just to throw in another option.

We got the in-laws on Skype (and my mum ages ago when we were overseas) they can use that

Old fashioned these days but they managed it so we are not changing it now

We tried Zoom for a family chat last week.

Out of the 4 families, 2 pictures at least were frozen, sound was all out of sync(hard to sing happy birthday with 4 different versions lol).

DD did a messenger call with her friend last week and had no issues.

Most of My kids therapists are using Google meets because it is the most secure. But they own meets as part of their company and I just answer their call. Otherwise hangouts is fine.

My 79 year old mum can use messenger video but she's mostly deaf so it's difficult anyway. We just resort to texts. Phone to phone, messenger is good. Could just be an internet connection issue.
