Thermometer for cooking

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

Like many people, I stay at home now and try my best in new cooking recipes.

I used to cook without any thermometers but yesterday I overcooked a meat a bit. Now I'm thinking about buying this unit. But I'm not sure which one to choose and which one is good.

Which thermometer do you use when you are cooking meat, fish, etc? Bluetooth, infrared or instant?

I've already checked these articles https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/content/top-five-meat-thermometers, https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/cooking-tools/g29090576/best-meat-thermometers/, https://grillguru.org/best-infrared-thermometer/ and really confused how to choose the right one.

I'd appreciate reading your replies!

I’ve used probes that stay in the meat and attach to the oven. It automatically turns off when it reaches the set temperature. Useful so long as you don’t insert it near the bone.

I’ve also used the cheaper probe ones. If it’s the one with a big dial, I just make sure it’s facing the oven door so there’s no opening and closing to check. I found the pop up ones to be not as reliable.

The instant read, infrared ones is good for many situations but not for roasting meats or when you need an internal temperature.

I also have candy thermometers and digital milk ones.

The only one I don’t like are the probes you put in but can’t leave in. I find piercing meat before it has a chance to rest means all the precious juices flows out.

We have the Weber iGrill. It’s Bluetooth with an app on the phone and you can have up to four probes running from it. It’s great because you don’t have to be in hearing distance of the oven/bbq so long as you have your phone on you.

We have one of the probe ones with the dial. Like PP, I stick it in so the dial is facing out so I can check without opening the oven door.

However, in hindsight, under/over cooked food was the first sign our oven was broken. I would look at getting something like this to see if your oven’s temperature control is working properly.
