Hands Up

I can’t believe the govt hasn’t come up with a better solution for them. They’ve lost their jobs, they are in hostels with communal bathrooms. It’s unsurprising they don’t want to stay in their bunk all day long. We should be helping them get home, and working out a deal with hotels in the meantime just like those returning from overseas. I feel very sorry for them. Yes, they probably should have left earlier but none of us had all the answers when we were young either.

They look like they’re having a great time at the Backpackers, certainly totally ignoring the rules the majority of us are obeying. Makes me mad. Nobody said go to the beach and lay in the sun together . Nobody told them to have wild intimate parties on roof tops. Sorry, I can’t see why I should feel sorry for them deliberate spreading the virus. Lock them up, that will sort out their accommodation woes.

OP, you are a far nicer person than I feeling sorry for them :ninja:.

They are in dorms with communal bathrooms. Going to the beach is the least of it. Nobody is giving them a solution other than stay in your bunk bed, which is like a cruise ship on steroids from an infection perspective.

Some of them are partying. Some residents are also ignoring advice.

agree...they seem to be an easy target, but with no solution and just hanging out in communal quarters seems a recipe for disaster. they can’t access any support, and maybe can’t get a flight to fly home.

I read the story of one, whose four separate booked flights home to Dublin were cancelled, one after the other, AND the airlines are only offering credit vouchers, so she's currently oop $8,000 and having to get her parents to pay for yet another attempt at a flight home.

I suspect there are so many individual stories - some will be completely irresponsible and some will have found themselves between a rock and a hard place.

But this has been going on since December/January they have had plenty of time to get home of the ones already here and if they arrived after this time there WHY???

I am trying to have sympathy for them I know now it is hard if not impossible to get flights so they are basically stuck here but how many of them are actually taking in seriously?

I can't think of a worse place to be stuck (other than a cruise ship).

Imagine if you're the kind of backpacker that wants to follow the advice. You're stuck in a dorm sharing a communal bathroom with people who keep partying. I'd be sh*tscared if I was them. I guess having the general public hating on them would be the least of their worries though.

Oh come on. Very few people changed their way of living in January. In December this wasn’t even known. Most of Australia only started making changes in March, mid- March onwards really. At which point flights were already being canceled. Accusing them of not reacting in January (and December???) is disingenuous.

Agree they are an easy target with no solution. Well there are solutions but the government haven't implemented any. These people are unqualified for any support and likely broke unless they have parents that can support them. I know when I was doing the back packing thing, I had no parental money to fall back on at all.
