Swimming and periods

Help - my DD (11) has her period and a pool party coming up this weekend. Doh!

We have one pair of the modi bodi period swimwear... so she can just wear those under dark board shorts.

I just wondered if as a second option (ie if they go back in the pool a second time) would the period undies under board shorts work ok?

She so far has had a very light flow. I’m sure I read in another thread someone’s DD has done that - but now I can’t find it...

I’ll be sending her with a dark towel too to wrap around herself.

She’s not at all worried, but it will be the first time swimming with her period. Not keen on her trying tampons just yet, being only 11.

It’s too late to order more swimwear, and I can’t find anywhere that has them in store. I’m kicking myself for not ordering more sets...

To be fair, I haven’t asked... it’s more that I’m concerned there won’t be time to get used to them by the weekend... and it just an extra thing to learn to manage.

Buy some tampons with the applicators and some without and ask her if she wants to try them, if she doesnt want to use them right now, at least they will be in the house, that way she can try them at her own leisure.

The modibodi swimwear will be fine though with or without board shorts.

True, but you never know. My DD tried tampons a couple of times unsuccessfully, but she didn't NEED to use them, she had other options. Then recently I had booked us with friends to go to a water park, and of course she got her period the day before! So because she desperately wanted to be able to go on all the slides, she happily (but still apprehensively!!) persisted with getting a tampon in.

Anyway I'm sure others can give advice. My DD has always been too nervous to try period swimwear, in case it leaks.

Oh and FYI the successful thing with DD was putting some lube on it!

Just asked her - she’s not keen to try tampons just yet. And it’s something I need her to be comfortable with.

I think she will be fine. My DD is a competitive swimmer and uses the ModiBodi for 2.5 hour training sessions. Hasn't had a problem.

My DD has tried and tried with tampons, with no success. I am contemplating taking her to the doctor for advice.

Yes ModiBodi swim wear. When you are in the water there is very little flow so staying in the water as much as possible helps!

I don't think the underwear would work. The bathers actually rinse out very easily so if she could find a private bathroom she could rinse them and re-wear.

Mine uses Ruby Love swimwear and period undies (used to be called Panty Prop). They couldn’t use Modibodi when they first got their period as the smallest sizes were too big and it’s the last thing you want with gaping as it defeats the purpose. Ruby Love’s sizing went down a lot smaller. Also, not sure if Modibodi has changed now but back when my daughter first needed stuff their swimwear was pretty much black only and two styles from memory. She wanted colourful, trendy, funky swimwear in a variety of styles from racer to fashion bikini and Modibodi didn’t fit the bill but they may have changed since then? She keeps both her period undies and period swimmers for two years and then replaces. Never had an issue with the swimwear but none of it is cheap :(

When I first got mine my mum told me all the options but left it up to me, I have never used a tampon ever but just didn't swim, I would definitely investigate swim period underwear these days if I had a daughter.

Would a pharmacist be able to assist?

Mumsyto2 we just buy the plain black bikini bottoms and them she wears nice bathers over the top. We tend to buy her bathers in a pattern with a black base and then you can hardly tell she is wearing two layers.
