Senan

Thoughts? Have you heard it before? Do you automatically assume it's made up when you see it? Said how it's spelt.

I’ve heard it in Ireland, but spelled Seanan. I wouldn’t assume made up unless it’s pronounced differently.

I would assume it’s Sean spelled incorrectly. Sorry.

It's Irish, pronounced sen-an. Can also be spelt like Rosie said above, seanan. Dh is Irish and I thought the Irish names would be more common in oz these days!

ETA seanan is pronounced Shawn-an and senan is the more anglicised version.

This, and I’m Irish. I prefer Rosies spelling.

It’s not an Irish name I’d heard, but googling Irish sites tells me it’s pronounced sort of Shen-non and spelt Senán? I have a quite uncommon Irish name and have been helping people pronounce and spell it all my life. It’s not been too big a deal.

I’d never seen that spelling and didn’t connect it with Seanan until I saw Rosie’s post. I prefer the Seanan spelling too, but that could be because that is what I’m used to.

I’d guess Sen-an but once I knew it was Irish I’d probably second guess myself and have no idea how to say it. I don’t know if it is a girl, boy or unisex name, not that it matters.

I know two people named Sinan. One is Albanian, and the other’s parents are from the same region, but I’m not sure exactly where. I’ve never heard of Senan.

seenan might be a better for spelling and pronounciation, and the non semen association

I've not heard of it. My Irish baby name book says it's pronounced Shan-awn. It's one of those names that sounds better in an Irish accent. I think the pronunciation will get mangled.

I’ve never seen it before. Does look a lot like semen and kid could be set up for a lot of teasing at school.

I would think unfamiliarity would be the only issue. And that's not much of an issue.

Seems easy to spell and say. Certainly not made up. Very agreeable name in fact:)

Never heard of it. I thought could be a spelling variation on an irish name in which case i would havs tried to pronounce it with a shh at the start.

I think it would be unlikely many would get the pronunciation you are seeking correct, but it didnt make me think of semen.

I've seen it before but spelled 'Seanan'. One of my favourite authors (Seanan McGuire) has the name.

I’ve not heard or seen it before. I wouldn’t of assumed it made up but perhaps Arabic but have come to learn its Irish. I think outside of Ireland an alternative spelling might be better.

I am not sure how people are seeing semen in Senan .. seems less close in letters or sound to semen than Simon does - and Simon is long standing name many people have, and I've never associated it with semen.

I have not heard of the name Senan - my first pronounciation thought would be Senn-an, sort of like seven.

Rhyming with Brennan.

If it is pronounced Shawn-an then I would spell it Seanan - as I think most people are familiar with Sean and would then get Seanan right from that.

Although I would just use Sean myself - but I realise that isn't the question.
