Best smart watch for cycling and swimming

Recommended Posts

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the number of smart watch choices out there. I would be using it mostly to track cycling and swimming laps. I don't like the rose gold look and nothing too heavy or chunky. I own a Samsung phone but don't have any allegiances to brands as we also own iPads.TIA

The Apple Watch is pretty amazing for swimming. Can’t comment on cycling sorry as swimming is my thing.

I have a Fitbit Ionic and use it for swimming, riding and running. It tracks activity very well but I have had a few issues with syncing it to my iPhone after upgrading the app. Nothing I haven’t been able to troubleshoot with the help of Google though.

The Garmins like the forerunner 935/945 would do it better but I have the forerunner 235 and it tracks cycling out of the box and I added a third party app (pool swim) to track swimming. I don’t swim laps often so I couldn’t justify doubling or tripling the cost of my watch simply to track swimming a bit better - maybe you can though.

Garmin are the best for swim/bike/run as far as features and functionality goes. But they are chunkier than something like an Apple Watch. Lots of different Garmin models to choose from, nothing as small as an Applewatch though.

You can’t pair an Apple Watch with an android phone.

As per a few people above, the Garmin Fenix 5s is a great choice for cycling, swimming and running. It works well out of the box, can accommodate both indoor and outdoor swimming and indoor and outdoor cycling (if you put your bike on an indoor trainer), and is very versatile. It can also be used for sports like skiing and hiking as well, if you’re into that.

They are pricey, but I wear mine every day. The garmin interface is also really nice for sleep tracking, and tracks your weight and other metrics too. The watch itself has some cool features like a compass and altimeter, shows the weather, and can sync to your phone if you want it to, for texts/email.

I started triathlons this year and bought myself a Garmin 935. It's not pretty but I LOVE it! It's light and durable and I only have to charge it once a week. The battery life on it is amazing.

I previously had an Apple Watch, which was okay, but it's more of a smart watch than a fitness watch.

Those garmins look good. I'm not a triathlete...or any kind of athlete (I just commute to work by bike and swim a km 3 times a week) and just want something to encourage me to cycle and swim faster as at the moment I go at a very cruisy(to put it nicely) speed. Having said that I do want something that measures accurately and not something that needs to be synced to my phone so if I'm understanding correctly the garmins do this?

The Garmin has built in GPS so records all your activity accurately and then automatically uploads it to the Garmin Connect website as well as Strava. It doesn't need a phone. There is a massive range and they vary in price from $300 - $2000. So it really depends what features you want. The more expensive ones have built in music functionality can can be used for eftpos/credit card purchases etc I've got the Fenix5 which I wear as a daily watch. I would suggest something like a Vivomove perhaps? Or 935. You just need to check on the Garmin website as some of the more basic ones only do running, not cycling or swimming.

Also with the Garmins, you can create your own workouts for bike and swim. Swim is good in that you can create your swim set with your rest intervals, stroke etc so you never have to touch your watch, it will vibrate when your rest is over.
