Sudden allergy/intolarance?

Recommended Posts

Chocolate Addict

My 14yo son who is on the spectrum and has ARFID (avoidance restrictive food intolerance disorder) will only eat nuggets and chips when we dine out, including take away.

No problem, except in the last 2 - 3 months he has been having a reaction to them. Upset tummy and loose poop. (a far cry from his bordering on constipation)

I have checked with a few of the places we eat at and none have changed anything, same oil, same brand nuggets and chips etc..

The only ones he can eat without drama at the moment is KFC.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing it? I was thinking maybe if fish or something was cooked in the same oil but one place is his favourite fish and chip shop and they haven't changed anything (spoke with the owner) so not sure.

We have an appointment next week with the GP to get a referral to an allergy specialist.

Does anyone have an clues on what it could be?

Is it possible he may still be constipated and the loose stool is in fact overflow. He may be impacted with rock hard stools and the rest us coming out loose around it.

It's possible to develop allergies or intolerances out of the blue for no apparent rhyme or reason.

Good luck with tracking the suspect ingredient down.

Yep. I developed most of mine as a teen. So could be an allergy. Or what PP said about loose stool not always meaning you're no longer constipated.

Doubtful. I have his pooing under control. He does occasionally get backed up but it doesn't present like this.

Also, this has only been happening after eating nuggets/chips. Within a few hours he is writhing in pain. :(

Yep, been there with my DS. Appeared to be loose stools, but in fact, was the opposite. He had severe constipation. Might be worth looking into?

Our gp said it can take months to clear backlog of constipation and loose stools does not indicate no more constipation so worth considering?

Sorry, forgot to come back. lol

Took him to the doctor, no constipation. He is unsure what it could be and because the places we go to have broad menu's it would be too hard/expensive to nail down a specific allergen.

His suggestion is to avoid those places lol.

He isn't getting such bad pain now but still soft stools when he does eat them (from new places).

He has constipation in the past, long history.
