Latex backed rugs - can they damage floors?

Recommended Posts

purpleduck

Found a lovely wool rug that has a latex backing on it.

Googling about that type of rug came up with info that the latex can deteriorate and stick to the floorboards.

Has this happened to anyone? We are in a rental with newish floorboards (floating) and obviously I want to be very careful!

Thanks!

Yes the floors need to breathe and the latex prevents them from doing so. I damaged the floors of my previous property with a latex rug.

I've had both (same house, but different rooms)

Large latex backed rug in living room - no problems (was there approx 8 years)

Small latex backed kids rug in a bedroom - disaster.

So would a felt or other type of rug pad under the rug help protect the floor?

Apparently some are rubber backed which is reportedly fine on boards? This rug is pretty large so they rug pad wouldn’t be for the non slip aspect, just the not stuff up the boards aspect

I would imagine rubber is the same. Can you call a rug store and find out?
