Hi,

Has anyone completed the above diploma online at all without having a cert 3 or experience in the field?

Just wondering how hard it would be especially with kids in school and at kinder and if having previous experience helped?

Did you study it through a tafe or private provider?

Did you organise your own placement or did they?

Would love to hear your experiences

Thanks

I had a quick look at 3 of the core units and 2 indicated that “Skills must be demonstrated in a regulated education and care service” and the third that “Skills must be demonstrated in the workplace.” The placement is essential to the attainment of the units, so I would highly recommend going with a provider that will arrange a placement.

Alternatively, I used to work for an RTO that had a partnership with an organisation that employed the trainees and had them in paid trainee work placements . Many secured employment with the placement organisations once they had completed their qualification. It was in aged care, but I’m sure there would be similar arrangements for child care somewhere.

It is a very intensive course.

You need to be sure that you want to work in Child Care if you have no experience - is the job really what you think the job is?

Depending upon which state you are in, it may be funded or subsidised by the state government.

I would also suggest playing an active role in your placement so that you can secure a placement and close to home. Having to travel long distances when not earning money can be stressful.

Quality private providers will be more flexible than TAFE

I started at TAFE online (WA) last year & moved providers when they proved to be crap. I also went for the diploma without doing Cert 3, it's honestly easy just time consuming but if you're organised & make a list of what you need to accomplish (for your placement assessment) for each day that you're there then you'll be alright.

It'll be very hard w/ kids at TAFE, in my experience they were not the most flexible + their assessments were done haphazardly, almost like they had a page quota so they chucked a load of activities in there w/ no regard to whether they're age appropriate, I'd recommend going elsewhere - what I ended up doing was starting my placement & talking to the owner & getting recommendations for other providers. I'd say go your preferred centres & ask around.

W/ Tafe specifically - they asked us to list down 3 preferred centres for placement, mode of transport & address. They try to get you into those or find ones close to you. I switched providers & they asked me if I wanted to stay at the centre I was doing placement on for TAFE & they handled talking to the owner for me then.

I completed my Diploma through OTEN, which is TAFE online. I enrolled through SEEK. I went straight to the diploma as 50 per cent of staff need a diploma or higher, so it's easier to hetva job.

I had a 2 year old when I started and had my second child halfway through. I ended up extending once, just as finding time to get study done was hard!!!

I found the course work pretty straight forward but time management wise it was a bit stressful. I was working at the same time, as you can get a job straight away as a room assistant.

I finished 2 years ago and work permanent part time at a preschool that I love. It's a challenging job at times snd the oay is crap, but it's very rewarding and even fun sometimes!
