Can I request an induction?

Recommended Posts

JuliaD

Currently pg with baby no 3 and wondering if I can request an induction before edd for a few reasons. My first 2 labours were fast - 3.75 and 3 hrs each. I’m worried that if my waters break at home, I won’t make it to hospital (prev 2 once waters broke they were born within the hour & only 5 mins of pushing with DD). Also baby is again measuring big - already sitting on 93rd percentile. DS was 3.86kg, DD 4.12kg at birth - so I have a history of bigger babies (no gd). Final reason is severe SPD (again had it both times previously too)- I can hardly walk. It’s really impacting every aspect of my life. Obviously I don’t want to be induced too early but anything after 38 weeks would be nice...can I ask? Will they do it?

No idea if they will do it but they sound like good enough reasons to me.

My only question is have you been induced before? If someone came at me with a syntocin (spelling?) drip again I cannot be held responsible for my actions. I absolutely hated the stuff.

Edited because I meant drip not drop. Stupid autocorrecting phone

From what I’ve read here, a lot will depend on whether your going private or public. I understand private OBs are more likely to agree to these requests.

Fwiw, your reasons sound completely valid.

Yes DS was induced. It was intense but otherwise ok. Obviously I’d prefer spontaneous labour but I will take an induction if I can get one. I should add DS was born at 40+10 & DD at 40+8 so I would say it’s unlikely I’ll go into labour spontaneously before my edd.

My private OB suggested moving my c-section forward to 38+3, as DS was measuring huge at every scan (including a very specialised one to check a potential placenta issue), and I was struggling so much. She was spot on in the recommendation, DS was 4.1kg already!

Size is not the decider on maturity unfortunately. A big baby can still have respiratory issues when born early.

That being said you can ask and women do get induced for what is called 'social reasons'.

Are you seeing someone privately? You are more likely to be successful if you are.

I had 'social inductions' for 4 of mine. Pain being the clincher, but mine were at 39 weeks.

Good luck

You can certainly ask.

My first was 3 hours and they got faster from there. I was offered induction for number 2 and 3. I declined for number 2 and was booked in for number 3 but baby came before the induction date and was delivered at home by her father.

I had maternity care for all 3 through a tertiary public hospital. Midwife led care, no complications. They would however only book me in for induction on/after my due date and I was told it could be moved for emergencies etc.

I was induced at a public hospital for my first because he was measuring big. So you probably could ask on that account.

The short labours should also be a reason. I'm pretty sure lots of public hospitals would ok with it. Baby born in hospital is far preferable to baby born on side of the road.

Private OBs would almost definitely agree

I was induced for my second on my EDD. I requested it as I was going in and out of labour, was in pain, my cervix looked quite "ready" but a stretch and sweep didn't bring it on.

All they did was break my waters - I'd asked them to start with that and wait a bit before the drip, and ob was happy to try. Within 10 minutes of breaking my waters was having regular, strong contractions and DD was born within a couple of hours (surprised everyone by being posterior too!)

I stopped at child 2, but was told to seriously consider induction if I had a third as both 1st and second were fast labours.

My bub was measuring 42 weeks at my 36 week appointment, I was so jack of being pregnant and my Ob could tell! I was induced 4 days later, a decision we made together!

Not an induction tion, but public on approved an early csection for my third. I was in so much pain & getting lots of spurious contractions, it was effecting me really badly mentally. So I asked and they were happy to get him out anytime after 38 weeks. I had a csection at 38 + 3. He was measuring around 60% so not really big or anything. In public it seems really dependent on the ob you get to see.

If the pain is affecting your mental health (lack of sleep etc) then speak up! The mothers mental health is really important.

I highly doubt they would induce before 38 weeks but they may be willing to at 39.

I am about to be induced at a public hosptial at 39 weeks due to my age (ob suggested it and I agree)

I know someone who was induced early due to pelvic pain and being unable to walk, and also due to needing someone to babysit their other child (and relatives were a bit far away) only a week early I think, but still, it gave them certainty of timing, and a week less pain. Private hospital birth though. All went well.

I asked my dr to induce me with my second (I’d been induced for my first - the drs decision). I had been sick with my second pregnancy for the whole 9 months, I wanted him out. I was 39 weeks.

He was fine inducing me.

I went private. That was almost 12 years ago.

I also was keen on induction for my second, and from memory I think my OB ended up suggesting it when I was limping in to my 36 week appointment - she was happy to induce from 38.5 weeks although timing worked out best for 39 weeks.

My private OB induced my second at 39 weeks when I was in a lot of pgp pain and couldn’t walk- it was much better than spontaneous labor for me. He even put the epidural in before inducing me- I’m still a bit in love with him as a result! Best of luck

I asked my private ob for an induction at my 39 week appointment. He said no. It was a public holiday 2 days later and long weekend attached so he wasn’t working. Went into labour and delivered on the PH so he ended up coming to see me anyway. Baby was huge so has said next time will happily induce me a couple of weeks early.

This was not in Australia but I was induced at what they calculated as being 2 weeks overdue - my son was not big as it turned out but I went in for a normal check up appointment and we discussed it then. I think it was their idea more than mine but can't fully remember the conversation

I requested an induction with my second for 'social reasons' (I wanted to be home for Christmas). My (private) OB said provided she felt the baby was ready to come she would induce me at 39+3. She ended up only having to break my waters in the morning and my DS was born 4 hours later. We went home on Christmas Eve.

Another who went private and had a ‘social’ induction at 39 weeks with number 3. 2nd birth had been quick & they were concerned I wouldn’t make the hospital given the distance I lived from it, spd pain, lots of pre-labour for a week before & had lost my plug, generally wasn’t coping. It wasn’t as good as my completely spontaneous second birth but was better than my first induction at 38 weeks for preeclampsia.
