Morning after pill

When skys are grey

Please no judgemental comments. I'm aware of how stupid I've been, don't really need anyone else to tell me so.

I'm wanting some advice on the morning after pill? I had unprotected sex late Wednesday night so still within the 72 hours I believe you have to be able to take this pill?

Do I need a script or can I just get it over the counter at the chemist? What do I ask for?

Thanks

Over the counter at the chemist, but they will ask you some questions and take detail of you DL.

Dont stress, we have all been there xx

You ask to speak with the pharmacist privately and ask for the morning after pill, they will ask you to fill out some paperwork, which you can decline to do, and will also generally ask for ID.

It's over the counter, no script required. But depending on the pharmacist you may be offered additional contraceptive options, I know that the pharmacist offered me condoms to go with the purchase...

I took it recently. No drivers licence and no paperwork. A few questions and it was handed over.

Go soon, if you take it after you ovulate it's much less effective.

It can also make you feel super nauseous.

So don't plan anything that requires you to be useful for 24 hours.

I fell over and gave myself a concussion once (many, many, many years ago) rushing to vomit.

MAP + concussion is not fun.

Why would anyone judge OP, you're a grown woman and the morning after pill is there for reasons like you've found yourself in. Don't sweat it, head to the chemist get what you need and relax. If you've already ovulated it can be a bit iffy as to how effective it may be but cross that bridge if and when you come to it xx

Thanks for all the replies.. I shouldn't ovulate until next Tuesday it's the guy who's hasseling me to go get it.

My cycle is normally spot on and I think we'll be fine I also have to work tonight and all weekend so don't want to have any nausea or anything

I'm not sure if I should get it or just hope for the best

No judgement whatsoever OP. Accidents happen, that's what it's there for!

I had to take it for the first time earlier this year. It's over-the-counter, I just said "Hi, I need some emergency contraception please". I was given a form to fill out that, from memory, just asked for age and the reason for seeking the MAP (eg. contraception failure) - I was happy to fill it out but you can decline to. It didn't ask for any personal details. Paid my $12 or whatever it was and was on my merry way.

Good luck :) There's no need to be embarrassed.

ETA - I guess whether you get it or not depends upon how much of an issue it would be for you if you were to fall pregnant (for me, it would have been a big issue, hence why I was at the chemist about 10 minutes after doing the deed!). FWIW, I didn't have any nausea or side effects at all, I felt perfectly fine.

I was in a similar situation, knowing my regular cycle well and knowing I wasn't due to ovulate for a number of days. I took it for peace of mind- just in case it was the one time I ovulated early, or incase some sperm were extra long lived. It also reassured my partner as a pregnancy would have been very much unwanted for both of us.

Only you know what levels of risk for pregnancy you'd be comfortable with. Also like most medications the possible side effects are different for everyone. Perhaps talk to the pharmacist/doctor/nurse about it?

I'm currently 13 weeks pregnant after takjng it within 48 hours so I'd take it as soon as possible. Side effects were minimal for me.

Hopefully you should be ok since your not due to ovulate for a while but I would still take the pill to reduce your chances of pregnancy.

Good luck x

OP I've taken it a couple of times in my lifetime and never had any side effects.

My cycle is spot on as well but I've taken it (twice, without any side effects) just to reassure myself. My desire not to be pregnant is stronger than trusting my cycle.

I have a 10yo who was the result of sex 5/6 days before ovulation (we were TTC but would have avoided falling PG that month due to due date issues).

Good luck OP.

There are two types of MAP,one only available by script but effective up to 120 hours.

You can take the other up to 5 days post as well but effectiveness goes down as time goes by(with 72 hours recommended, within 24 hours best).

Both are best taken asap.

Nausea and vomiting are possible side-effects but only effect a small percentage of women.

I've seen around 5% mentioned.

Only you can know how whether you can accept the risk of being pregnant.

I took it a few months ago after somehow the condom got shredded?! (Side note: get the effing vasectomy DH) I was asked a few questions to determine I was within the time period and then it was handed over. No judgement. I was mortified though and went to a different chemist to our usual....

ETA: no side effects, and I often do get side effects on medication.

My DS1 was conceived from having sex about 6 days before I ovulated (with my date of conception back calculated from a dating scan plus symptoms). So unless you are ok with a pregnancy, I'd take it asap.

I've taken it once, zero side effects.

Good luck.
