Birthing classes. Yay or nay?

Recommended Posts

Wango

We were booked for a c- section due to GD and concerns baby would be big. So we went to a special Caesar class put on by my OB practice (was included in the management fee) plus a separate tour of the hospital.

I went into labour at my baby shower at 36 weeks and ended up with a vaginal delivery and wasn't the worse for not having had the class.

Would highly recommend a hospital tour though so that you have your bearings post birth.

Your OB probably won't be there for most of your labour. You'll spend more time with the midwives, so if the classes are being run by midwives at the hospital, then worth going to.

I had also read plenty of books, but they can't tell you what happens at your hospital. Our classes told us about the logistics of what would happen (baby will be vaxed, labelled, weighed etc, they don't bath on the first day, DH can stay over the first night etc). They also talked through breastfeeding, feed/sleep/play routines, third day blues, how to handle visitors.

Lots of good info! Thanks ladies :)

I have already done one hospital tour with dh in the first trimester and will do another in 5 weeks to refresh myself with everything. Those are included in my private cover.

My OB has a specific understudy OB and a head midwife specific to her patients at the hospital and one of them is always present at me meetings, and they all share notes so whilst I would really like my OB there I'm comfortable with the second OB and midwife checking in most often during the birth.

The midwives after birth I have already met and they have said they come up with a signal with each new mum, they'll pop their head in 15 mins after a guest has arrived and if ur feeling overwhelmed you can give the signal and they will make up a reason on the spot to get everyone out for you.

I'll talk to DH tonight about the classes maybe being good for him so he has all the info and doesn't feel left out of the birth. He might also like meeting other expecting dads because he has mentioned he doesn't have many people to talk to (that's not an issue for me, I'm the baby of my friend group and a lot of them are pregnant with their second right now)

I'll call around the local public hospitals too and see if they have a free one so he won't try and go back to the cost debate.
