Celebrities and twins

George Clooney and wife Amal are having twins. So is Beyonce. I seem to be reading a lot of celebrity twin announcements. Is this a 'thing' now?

I don't think 'now' really captures it.

Mariah Carey

Julia Roberts

are two more that spring to mind over the past 10? years+

It's in line with increasing availability of IVF.

I would say that it is to do with assisted reproduction, except in Madonna's case where she has chosen to adopt.

Due to age, schedules, medical reasons, they need to utilise IVF, and they are not as strict as strictly regulated over there, as it is here, so there is an increased chance of multiples.

Aren't twins more common with older birth mothers? I would assume that has something to do with it. Celebrity puts having babies on hold for career then has higher chance of multiples.

Bragelina. Mariah Carey. I don't necessary think these instances of twins are higher than the general population except for the fact they are boy/girl which makes it seems like they are using IVF and gender selection.

Having said that my boy/girl twins were naturally conceived and I get upset when people assume I had IVF just so I could have one of each.

Hasn't a celeb recently had triplets as well?

It feels like the incidence of multiples is higher among celebs than the general populace, but I'm only basing that on a vague feeling from miscellaneous headlines I've seen.

I get the impression American doctors are much more willing to implant two or more embryos when doing ivf.

And all these celebs seem to get pregnant in their 40s....

It's not a matter of willingness it's a matter of law. In Australia it's illegal to transfer more than two embryos.

Correct, the laws are far more lax in the US.

Also, it is a 'transfer' of embryos, whether they 'implant' is beyond the doctors' control. Just sayin.

They are often boy/girl twins too so I'm thinking IVF.

Also PGD is legal over there too

Yeah, your point is...

Older women have a higher chance of twins not just from IVF becoming more likely for some of them but for other fertile older women their body thinks its "last chance saloon" and starts to release double eggs.

I don't think it's the celebrity so much but more their socio-economic circumstances, they know they have options so they can leave having children until it suits them. And if they do require IVF having double eggs implanted may be a risk they are happy to take as they know they have the money to raise 2 children if both implant.

Why if its boy/girl then they are definitely fraternal which means there could be a genetic component as only fraternal twins run in families, it also means they could be due to the double eggs of fertile older women. Of course IVF can't be ruled out but its not the only reason

True. But my ivf dr didn't want to transfer more than one anyway, even if given the option of two.

Yes, the guidelines only recommend double transfers under specific circumstances.

I'm still betting ivf in the case of these celebs

Now I want twins.

I must be crazy lol!

Yep! You're crazy :)

I have twins and it's a whole different ballgame to a singleton. I get strangers saying it to me because it's oh so cute, the reality however is not so cute (as much as I love them it's hard work).

But seriously

A lot of celebs do egg donations as well. Ask any OBY/GEN and they will tell you that celebrities largely lie about their apparently magical ability to get pregnant naturally in their 40s. It drives them mad as they are the ones telling women coming to see them at 45
