Sending my premmie to Day care

Recommended Posts

I'm having a dilemma about sending DS 19mths to day care next year. He will be 2yo in March and we have another baby on the way in April.

Currently I work 3 days a week and DS is cared for by MIL and my mum. DS has cerebral palsy and does need some extra assistance (not yet walking on his own although hopefully will be soon with the help of an AFO, needs specific activities to assist with movement in his right arm/hand). I'm also quite particular about his food and make sure he has a high fat diet to assist with weight gain.

I think he will benefit from the social interactions and activities that can be provided. He's very social and loves other children. However, im completely terrified of him catching illnesses etc. especially as we will have a new (and very likely also premmie) baby. I'm also worried they won't pay as much attention to his extra needs. Is it worth sending him or just staying with the status quo and maybe going to a regular playgroup or something?

Any advice/experiences would be much appreciated.

Most people who send their kids to a regular childcare centre do find that the kids do get quite a few illnesses in their first few years at daycare. A lot of people for this reason recommend sending kids to family daycare which has less kids so less chance of exposure to germs and the like. He would still get the social interaction you'd like him to have in a FDC setting. Not sure how it would work though in terms of his extra needs at a FDC, maybe call around and see what different ones in your area offer.

mr 24weeker was sent to day care just after his 1st birthday.....

he did get a few colds shortly after starting (yes bronchioltis was once too)

but after a while his immune system caught up

we sent him to godstarts and they were fine. they provided food.

if you find one which you have to supply your own... just give him the extra stuff in that too...

always be upfront when you check em out.

hi. this is x - hes a prem, has cp and fussy with food.....
