Mass found on DH's lung by coincidence

Recommended Posts

Colleer

Hi there,

I never thought I would be posting in this section, and fingers crossed when we get the results back my post will have been in error.

Drs have discovered a mass on DH's lung purely by accident. He had a chest xray as a routine part of his stress test on his heart (stress test was all clear ) but the xray showed a small mass on his right lung.,

He was sent for a CT scan, and then for a PET scan, and next stage is a biopsy next week. PET scan showed the mass on his lung, a spot on his shoulder (which the DR thinks might be a lymph gland, and a spot on his jaw - which he isn't sure about)

It is all out of the blue - fit healthy 37 year old with absolutely no signs what so ever. Never been a smoker

When DH saw the lung specialist last week he said that there is a 5-10% chance that it is nothing to worry about. Which I suppose sounds a bit better than 90-95% chance it is cancer. The Dr said he would like to meet me at the next appt (couldn't go to the one last week as it was 5 hrs away and I had the kids to look after) and started talking of radiation oncologist, chemo oncologists etc (as in describing how they have a team of drs that work together)

So now we are waiting on the biopsy next week to find out what we are dealing with.

I like to have the facts in front of me. If I know the name of what we are dealing with then it is easier to handle. I can't stand the waiting! To top it off DH started working away from home (3hrs away - back most weekends) just as the lump was discovered and tests have been carried out over the last couple of weeks.

On the upside, if it is a cancer of some sort - we have been extraordinarily lucky to pick it up way before any symptoms. And I think this is why the Drs are jumping on it - to hit it on the head whilst we have the advantage.

Waiting........waiting....... never my strong point!

It sounds like your DH is in excellent hands, OP.

Once the biopsy results are back, the path forward will be clearer. I can assure you that one mass in one location is the best possible diagnosis for successful treatment.

Best wishes to you both. My thoughts are with you.

Thanks for the support everyone :)

Well Thursday or Friday last week DH got a call from the lung specialist to say that they have changed their mind and that he won't need a biopsy at this stage. They said that they were sure it was a fatty lump or cyst or something (?) on his lung and that it should have been picked up as that right from the chest xray. There was apparantely metabolicly active tissue around the lump but that it was not necessarily anything to worry about, and that he will schedule another xray for march next year.

Awesome! we thought! Had a great weekend, started de-stressing, and settling into the groove of DH working away with out the stress of cancer looming over our heads.

Spoke to DH last night.

Dr rang him yesterday and said "Yeah, No. (not his exact words!) We WILL need to do a biopsy in the next few days, and get the results back in 3 working days, and we will then know exactly what we are dealing with""

WTF!! Stress levels back through the roof! The upside is that they are taking it seriously and want it sorted asap. But I really don't need this roller coaster!

Biopsy set down for this Friday........ waiting waiting.....

Thinking of you - the waiting is the worst part.

Better to have it biopsied now and move forward than to watch and wait for months... and then to find it's something insidious.

Hopefully your minds will be put to rest after the biopsy.

I think it's best too that the biopsy is done. I would have pushed for that if they hadn't decided to go through with it.

Better to know exactly what you are dealing with.

The best of luck for a good outcome!

Having the biopsy is good then you know for sure what you are dealing with.

8 years ago I had a lump on my head - Dr said probably nothing but you could see his relief when the biopsy results said it was just a fatty lump.

It is no doubt going to be a long week for yourself and your DH, OP.

I hope Friday goes fine, and you get good results next week.

It's better to have the biopsy and know for certain what it is.

I hope the week goes by quickly for you both and that the results are positive.

So, DH had his biopsy on Friday. Spoke to the lung specialist today who said basically that he has the preliminary results back and that there is something not good there (didn't actually say what it was) and that he would like to see him tomorrow afternoon in Sydney.

I need to be there for this appointment I think so I am busy trying to sort out care for the children so I can get to Sydney tomorrow which is 5 hours away.

We have up till now kept my family in the dark as we didn't want the extra hassle and worry, but now is the time to call on them and their support. Mum lives two hours away so I am trying to get a hold of her to come up tomorrow.

So , really, the news that something was up was not unexpected. I suppose now its figuring out exactly what the issue is and how we deal with it.

I thoroughly appreciate being able to come in here and share our journey with you all :bighug:
