Can someone explain?

So why do the British rowing teams get to row in the best lane even if they have not qualified the fastest?

I only heard the end of the 'explanation' but didn't quite 'get it'.

I want to know too - it seems to be working for them.

 

And why is 6 the best and 1 the worst? Something about the wind?

6 was the fastest as it is sheltered by the stands

I think they said earlier that they draw for the lanes depending on their qualifying times, so fastest and second fastest draw for five and six, slowest and second slowest draw for one and two and so on. One comment in the SMH did point out that the draw very much went GB's way today, but that does happen sometimes.
