Why age is important when it comes to choosing your baby's name

They say age is just a number, but when it comes to welcoming a baby into the world a parent's age could have an immediate impact in an unexpected way.

Nameberry has revealed statistics from the US and the UK which show younger parents prefer less conventional names, opting for more unique and adventurous monikers for their offspring compared with their older fellow new parents. Meanwhile older new mums and dads choose more traditional names that are more likely to be found in top 20 most popular names lists.

The popular baby name site broke new parent groups down into ages, 18-24, 25-35 and 35-44, and based its findings on the most searched names by visitors to Nameberry from each age group.

Based on their findings, older couples tended to lean towards simpler more vintage names, whereas the younger groups were more elaborate and less conservative, especially for girls' names which saw a surge in surnames like Hunter and Harper.

Nameberry noted the younger group could be looking up names for fun, rather than actually using the names for babies. However McCrindle's 2020 Australian baby name report said Generation Alpha (babies born by 2024) were likely to have very different names from other generations.

The report backs up the theory that millennials are after more unique names for their children because a name is now also considered for its appeal as a "social media handle, your personal brand and your web domain".

"There are many trends and considerations for today's parents when it comes to choosing a name for their Gen Alpha baby," the report read. "With names for this generation considered digital real estate in an increasingly global era."

According to Nameberry, this are the names at the top of the list for each age group of expectant parents.
