baby name

We’re halfway through 2014, so it’s a good time to see which baby names are proving popular with parents this year – and where they’re finding their inspiration.

Leading US baby name site Nameberry has released its data on the top 100 most searched for names for boys and girls for the year so far. The list usually gives a good idea of what we’ll be seeing in the final end-of-year tally complied by official government departments.

So what are parents-to-be searching for in 2014? The most searched for female name, Imogen, has had a sudden rise; it has never been in the top 1000 in the country, and was last year used for only 131 girls. Last year in Australia, however, it ranked at number 44.

Baby names inspired by TV and movies

The name Arya from Game of Thrones was a new entry to the UK top 100, up by 183 per cent.

For boys, Asher is taking the top spot after a rise up the charts in previous years. Last year the name – meaning fortunate or happy – was ranked at number 104, so this could be the year it breaks into the top 100.

Other male names which have rocketed into the public consciousness include Silas, Jasper and Milo, which have all entered the top 10 for the first time.

The only new entrant to the girls’ most-searched for top 10 is the classic name Claire, meaning clear or bright.

The names that have risen the furthest in the first six months of the year were Cordelia and Archer, while other fast-risers included Knox, Bodhi, Soren, and Wyatt for boys, and Ellie, Adeline and Ruby for girls.

As for their inspiration, it seems parents are, as always, looking towards movies and TV shows. New entries to the top 100 include Khaleesi (Game of Thrones), Elsa (Frozen), Katniss (The Hunger Games) and Hazel (The Fault in Our Stars).
