Blooming ... How New Idea reported the story.
Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman is pregnant with her first child - but the happy event has taken a toll on her health. The former athlete has revealed in today's New Idea that she is safely through her first trimester and can't wait to meet her child, but her pregnancy has also triggered type 2 diabetes.
''I am so totally lost in love with this baby already,'' she told the mag.
''I think it will take my breath away when we first meet.'' Freeman, who turns 38 next week, also spoke about the moment she and funds manager James Murch, whom she married in 2009, first saw their baby. ''I was totally overwhelmed when I saw the ultrasound,'' she said.
''And hearing its heartbeat. It's funny because it was like I was having an out-of-body experience but it was obviously happening in there, in my tummy.''
Freeman said she would have to test her blood-sugar levels and inject herself with insulin four times a day to manage her diabetes, which runs in her family.
''It came as a jolt at first. Being an elite athlete I was really healthy, and I was really fit - I was one of the fittest women in the world. And then all of a sudden your body is disappointing you, in a way. And it's like your pride gets hurt,'' she said.
''They say I have type 2 diabetes but there is a chance it could go away after the baby's born. So we'll just wait and see.''
