A father has sparked outrage after admitting he walked out of his own gender reveal party when he discovered he was expecting another daughter.
"[My wife] has been grouchy her whole pregnancy so her sister offered to plan her a gender reveal party," the father shares on Reddit, adding that the couple already have a five-year-old girl.
"The plan was that all the food and decorations would be blue or pink and in the end we'd get one of those special sparklers that would light up in either blue or pink to reveal the gender."
The day of the party arrived, along with what the dad called "the moment of truth".
"The sparkler turns out to be pink for a girl," he writes. "I don't know what came over me, but all I felt at that moment was very bitter disappointment. To be honest, all I was hoping for for baby number two is to be able to toss a ball around with him and coach little league. Or watch him go on Boy Scouts camping trips."
Dad explains that while he knows his daughter is only five, "I've already started to deal with the dramas of being a father of a girl. And the thought of having to double up now on the neuroticism was harrowing."
After growing up in a house with three older brothers and one younger sister, dad notes he can't imagine seeing himself "outnumbered".
"My wife grabbed my arm as people were approaching us to say their congratulations and said I needed to look happier. At that moment I just snapped. I shook my head and walked out to my car (we came separately) and drove to my sister's house."
As you can imagine, fleeing from his own gender reveal party wasn't well received.
"I start getting texts from my sister-in-law and my wife saying 'way to reenact' their dad leaving their mum when they were 10 and 12."
But the man feels the accusation is unfair. "I just needed some time alone," he says. "I didn't ask to be flabbergasted - it just happened. And I don't think it's fair that they would have demanded I smile and nod for the next couple of hours."
Redditors do not agree.
"No one is stopping you from tossing a ball with your daughter, or from camping with them, or encouraging them to participate in sports. You are the one stopping them from this," one commenter writes.
"He stormed out of HIS OWN CHILD'S gender reveal party because he was angry that his sperm made a second girl," says another.
"You are sexist," one Redditor adds. "You should seek therapy because you are not very self aware."
"In a family of all females, I still went camping, tagged along to baseball games, and played plenty of sports," one woman writs. "Your future with your child is what you make it! I loved learning about what my dad was interested in (I think all kids do!) So, there's no need to have a temper tantrum because baby #2 won't be a boy."
