These are the rarest baby names in Australia

They're the baby names used only once and while many are rare and beautiful names from other lands, there are some that are just outlandish.

South Australia is the only state which publishes a full list of baby names for the public to see, including a few thousand rare ones used only the once in that state for boys and girls

Apart from the usual creative spellings, such as Kooper and Jaxen, and all the usual nods to Star Wars characters such as Obi, Rei and Kylo, there were some highly unusual monikers given to the youngest South Australians in 2018.

Themes

Some definite themes have emerged - star power, nature, and place names, along with aspiration. There are even two single letter names given to boys - J and S.

Rumi, Stormi, Beckham and Solange are all nods to famous families which include the Kardashian-Jenners, Knowles and Beckham clans. Schapelle also gets a mention as a most unusual kind of celebrity to honour.

People have been mining the natural world for their baby names with Forest (girl), Gingko, Moon, Orchid, Bambi, Panda, Lightning and Reef featuring on the most unusual list.

Place names and travel associations also got a nod with Journey, Seattle and Oregon.

Then there are the aspirational names - money, ambition, and personal attributes all embodied in names such as Braezen, Princess, Moet, Porsche, Precious, Forbes and of all things, Predestine.

Check out our picks for the most striking of the one-use names.
