The second trimester
- July 1, 2008
Pregnancy and birth
The second trimester is often considered to be the best period of pregnancy. You will probably find that many of the side effects of the first trimester have begun to disappear and you should begin to experience a general feeling of contentment and well-being. Also, you do not yet have the full weight of a maturing baby placing stress on your body.
What will happen during the second trimester?
Digestion
Your digestive system is slowing the rate at which it moves food through your body. This and the increasing size of your uterus pushing on your stomach can cause heartburn and you may also experience bloating and indigestion. The slower rate of your digestive system can also result in constipation. Try to eat smaller meals more often, rather than three larger meals a day.
Pigmentation
Pigmentation will continue to increase during this trimester. You may notice the linea negra (a dark line down the centre of your abdomen) begins to appear.
Size
You will lose your waistline and will begin to look pregnant during this trimester.
Nipples
Your nipples will become darker in colour and may begin to secrete colostrum.
Baby movements
You will begin to feel the baby move during this trimester.
Breathing
You will notice a change in your breathing to deeper breaths and you may begin to experience shortness of breath.
Weight gain
You will gain the most weight during the second trimester, which can result in back pain.
Antenatal care
An ultrasound will probably be carried out at around 18 to 19 weeks, giving you a chance to see your baby for the first time. You will also be able to listen to your baby's heartbeat and may be able to see him/ her move.
Preparing for baby
This is actually a good time to start shopping and preparing for baby. If you are superstitious about buying things too soon, window shop now (before your size makes shopping uncomfortable) and return to make purchases at the end of this trimester.
