Conception

On average, about two thirds of a teaspoonful of seminal fluid is expelled on ejaculation, containing about 210 - 525 million sperm.

Of these, about a quarter will be abnormal and the remaining three-quarters capable of sustaining independent movement which is needed to reach the egg in the fallopian tube.

The speed of movement of the sperm is dependent on the acidity of the environment they enter. Vaginal secretions are slightly acidic (slowing sperm down) while the uterine cavity is alkaline and so much more friendly to sperm. Of the millions of sperm contained in each ejaculation, only a few hundred actually reach the female egg in the fallopian tube.
