Traditional names are in the top 10
Jack and Mia are the most popular baby names in Australia.
Jack topped the boys' list, followed by William and Lachlan; with Mia
ahead of Chloe and Isabella in the popularity stakes for girls.
Jack has been the most popular name seven times in the past nine years
- and the past five years in a row, according to McCrindle Research,
which released the 2008 baby names list.
Social researcher Mark McCrindle says the fashion of names has changed
in a generation - in 1950, John was the most popular boy's name but is
now ranked 80th.
"Now that Generation X are parents, they're showing their conservative side," Mr McCrindle said in a statement.
"Today's parents are avoiding gender neutral names ... yet there is a
creativity in their conservatism with the traditional names sharing the
top 10.
Top 10
Boys: Jack, William, Lachlan, Joshua, Riley, Thomas, Cooper, Oliver, James and Ethan.
Girls: Mia, Chloe, Isabella, Charlotte, Emily, Ella, Olivia, Sienna, Ava and Sophie.
