A 96-year-old man has become the ‘world’s oldest new father’ following the birth of his second child.
Ramajit Raghav, from Kharkhoda village, near New Delhi, India, became a dad for the first time two years ago, when he was 94. On October 5 this year, his wife, 54-year-old Shakuntala, had their second son.
"We had planned for another baby after my first son was born in 2010. It's a blessing to have a baby at now and I am enjoying fatherhood at this age … It's a great feeling for both of us,” Raghav told a local newspaper.
Although advanced paternal age has been linked to a higher number of genetic mutations, Raghav's youngest son, named Ranjeet, is said to be healthy.
In a week when local politicians claimed that an increase in alcohol consumption and drug use was weakening the sperm count of Punjab men, Raghav said his teetotal lifestyle, daily yoga and a diet rich in fruit and dairy was the cause of his virility.
I want to send them to school and wish to see them lead a respectable life
He added that he and his wife have sex “three or four times a night” as “it's very important for a husband and wife to have sex regularly”.
Although Raghav said that he and Shakuntala are absolutely delighted to have another member in the family, they’ve decided not to have any more children. Raghav works in the fields and collects a pension, but admits he has limited financial resources and can't support more children.
"My wife will undergo a [sterilisation] operation this year. We aren't planning more children, two are more than enough,” he said.
“I have been a farmer all my life, but I want them to become high ranking government workers. I want to send them to school and wish to see them lead a respectable life.”
His wife said her almost-centenarian husband doesn’t seem old to her, adding, “It doesn't matter how old he is, I love him and I care for him dearly … He makes a wonderful father.”
There has been no official verification of Raghav's age, and the couple's history has been reported in a variety of ways: The Daily Mail said the couple met 22 years ago at a Muslim shrine after Raghav had been widowed for 25 years, while The Huffington Post stated that they met 10 years ago, and that Raghav has been celibate and single his whole life.
