Organising your laundry

Organising your laundry

Let’s face it, doing the laundry is a chore but one of those things that needs to get done. But, you can make it more bearable by a well organized, clean and inviting laundry room space.

Organisation and storage are key but don’t forget to add a little style!

  1. Start with a good clean out – get rid of old liquids and cleaning products, old rags and pegs and bits and pieces that have just been dumped in here as a dumping ground.
  2. Function: what do you need out of your laundry? Think size – do you iron in here? Sew? Make sure you have sufficient space for what you need to do.
  3. Layout: are you happy with layout? Can the dryer be wall mounted to give you extra space? Take a look at what space you have available for baskets and what wall space you have for shelving and extra wall storage.
  4. Products: sort out into 4 different categories what you need on a daily basis for easy access such as washing powders, softeners and stain removals and don’t forget a basket for missing socks.
  5. Draw up a draft plan on what you need to add to your laundry such as shelves, hooks and new baskets and make a shopping list.
  6. Install good storage – this is key. Double baskets or 3 divider carts are fantastic for separating colours and whites and delicates or towels, small storage baskets are great for pegs and washing products.
  7. Laundry basket – the tip here is to get the little ones and your partner to actually put the dirty garments in the laundry basket and not on the floor. Get them involved in the laundry make-over and perhaps they will help out a little bit more when it comes to doing the laundry.
  8. Something pretty to look at: choose a colour or stick with neutral tones or white, but a fresh coat of paint can do wonders. If you choose a colour you can use this as the style palette when you are choosing cool accessories such as baskets and jars.
  9. Hangers – hang your washed clothes and delicates straight onto hangers and put on the line – less wrinkles and easy to just hang up when they are dry. Howards have a value pack of 20 timber hangers for $24.95
  10. A great door space idea is hanging an over the door hanging rack or hook to hang your smalls such as underwear and socks. Howards storage have an ironing hanger which clips on the back of the door for $8.95.
