This year alone around 12,000 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. It's a dreadful statistic, but there is something you can do to improve the outcome for these women. By taking part in Pink Ribbon Day, you'll be raising funds towards research, education and patient support programs.
In addition to ordering pink products or making a donation, a fun way to raise money while enjoying some 'me time' is to host your own fundraiser like a Pink Ribbon get-together during October, breast cancer awareness month.
Hosting a Pink Ribbon fundraiser
Spoil yourself for a good cause. Organise a Pink Ribbon event with your nearest and dearest friends and register the event with the Cancer Council. You'll then receive an information pack and be able to sell Pink Ribbon merchanise on the day.
Make the day special by organising babysitters or alternative care arrangements so you can really relax. Get in the spirit by wearing pink and decorating with pink flowers like roses, oriental lillies or gerberas and serving champagne with pink guava juice.
We've collected some scrumptious brunch ideas to get your started from basil frittata with smoked salmon to pear pancakes.
After the event, share photoes and stories from your breakfast with the Pink Ribbon Day facebook page.
Where does donated money go?
The money raised for Pink Ribbon Day will help Cancer Council to fund more world class research, practical support and prevention and early detection programs.
Here are some examples of how your funds could contribute to the fight against breast cancer:
$12 (4 ribbons) = information booklets for five breast cancer patients
$60 (10 pens) = training and resources for breast cancer support group
$120 (20 pens) = transport for cancer patients to and from treatment
$175 (35 enamel pins) = 75 calls to the Cancer Council Helpline
$250 (25 diamante pins) = funding towards clinical trials which test new ways to prevent, diagnose & treat cancer
What else can you do?
Not fussed on breakfast but still want to help out? You can assist the Cancer Council by ordering pink products to sell, volunteering your time to help, buying pink, holding a pink fundraiser or making a donation now.
Another way to show your support this month is to use the Pink Ribbon Day Ribbon Studio to create your personalised ribbon image.
