A family is hailing their dog as a hero after he helped raise the alarm over an abusive babysitter.

Benjamin and Hope Jordan hired 22-year-old Alexis Khan to care for their baby son Finn earlier this year – but not before making sure they were happy with her references and a criminal background check.

All seemed fine with the arrangement at first. But after a while the couple, from South Carolina, noticed their Labrador cross dog, Killian, acting strangely towards the babysitter.

"About five months into her being our babysitter, we started to notice that our dog was very protective of our son when she would come in the door," Mr Jordan told WCSC.

"He was very aggressive towards her and a few times we actually had to physically restrain our dog from going towards her.

“He is [usually] a very personable dog so for him to show aggression toward anyone is a sign that something was wrong.”

Concerned that Khan was abusing the dog in their absence, the Jordans placed an iPhone under the lounge to record audio of what was happening in their home.

What they heard, when they came home and listened to the recording later that day, was chilling.

“It started with cussing, then you hear slap noises and [Finn’s] cry changes from a distress cry to a pain cry,” Mr Jordan said.

Afterwards, he said, you could his son’s cries change again, and it sounded like he was being shaken.

"You could hear the reverberation in his voice as he is being shaken – that is what disturbed us the most."

“I just wanted to reach through the audio tape, go back in time and just grab him up. To know that (for) five months I had handed my child to a monster, not knowing what was going on in my house."

The couple rushed Finn to hospital, where he was given the all clear. They then took the recording to the police, and a few weeks later, Charleston City Police arrested Khan. She admitted to the abuse.

This week, Khan pleaded guilty to assault and will serve one to three years in prison. She will also be placed on a child abuse registry, meaning she can no longer work with children.

The Jordans say that Finn shows no signs of trauma from his time under Khan’s care.

As for the heroic Killian, he’s back to his happy self now that Khan is out of the picture – and he and Finn are continuing their very special friendship.
