CHOICE has proven you don't need to pay anywhere near top dollar for your laundry detergent, naming a $4 powder the best in Australia in its most recent testing.

Coming in at just 16 cents per wash and scoring 81 per cent, Coles brand Ultra got the top honour in the most recent CHOICE report comparing brands.

It's surely music to the ears of families all over Australia struggling with the demands of keeping a whole family's clothes clean, on a budget.

Coles will surely be bombarded with demand for its inexpensive product now that it has the CHOICE endorsement of quality.

What's more, it's versatile and can be used in both front and top loading washing machines.

CHOICE states how it decides on what constitutes a quality laundry detergent.

"The best laundry detergents will remove spills like oils, tomato, and starches from your clothes. Detergent also amounts to at least half the running cost of your washing machine so it pays to pick the right one."

Coming in second is Omo Ultimate (above left) for front loading washers, with a score of 80 per cent but costing a comparatively whopping 88 cents per wash.

And in third place is Omo With A Touch Of Comfort (above right) with a score of 79 per cent and 52 cents per wash.

And what of the lowest ranking laundry detergents?

That dubious honour goes to Supreme Heavy Duty Laundry Liquid, a complete washout with a CHOICE score of just 45 per cent at 21 cents per wash.
