It's one of the less recognised, but very important, milestones of early childhood development - the ability to blow out birthday candles without assistance.
Toddler Marty Williamson was captured on film as he made a valiant attempt to extinguish the flame on his cake recently.
"We had a quick celebration the morning of our son's 2nd birthday before my husband went off to work for the day, and our son was having some trouble blowing out his birthday candle," Marty's mum Ashleigh Williamson wrote when she posted the cute clip on YouTube.
The boy's huffing and puffing is entertaining, but ultimately unsuccessful. Then dad comes to the rescue with an ingenious way to help his son achieve his goal - he gives the boy a straw.
Little Marty's efforts have been cheered on from around the world, with the clip already viewed more than 1.6 million times since it was uploaded last week.
To prove that practice really does make (almost) perfect Mrs Williamson posted another video of her son blowing out a candle at his birthday party later that day.
While the task still required a lot of effort on Marty's part, and a little bit of help from dad, at least there was no need for a straw second time around.
