When his daughter was born in 2010, Dave Engledow knew he wanted to “put together a collection of photos that she would treasure as an adult.”
Two years and almost 60 professional photographs later, he’s achieving that goal – and then some.
Engledow and his daughter Alice Bee are the subjects of his ongoing ‘World’s Best Father’ series, which sees the duo in a range of dangerous – yet darkly humorous – situations.
After first creating the photos for friends and family, Engledow decided to make a calendar of the images in 2011. This year, after the photos have been seen by a wider audience via his Facebook page and Fotoblur gallery, he’s started a campaign to make a larger run of 2013 calendars to be sold in time for Christmas. Donations can be made via his Kickstarter page.
On his Facebook page, Engledow explains that he achieves the pictures by taking a photo of himself in a posed position, then by taking a photo of his daughter. The images are merged in Photoshop, where the dangerous elements are added – his daughter is never actually in harms’ way, he says.
The character I portray in this series is intended to be a parody of the father I hope I never become
“The 4th of July image is the one that really got the WBF series off and running, and provides the template for the vast majority of images in this series – multiple shots taken on a tripod and merged in Photoshop to create a (hopefully) realistic and humorous portrait of an act of parenting that is dangerous, neglectful, or just plain wrong,” he writes on his Kickstarter page.
Engledow’s wife is currently deployed overseas, but he says “she still is able to provide insight and assistance with image selection via google hangout.”
“I've always used humor as a way to deal with my personal fears and neuroses, and in many way these images are often an attempt to do just that – to illustrate humorously the fears that I and, as I've learned, many other new fathers have about fatherhood.
“The character I portray in this series is intended to be a parody of the father I hope I never become – distracted, self-absorbed, neglectful, clueless, or even occasionally overbearing.”
