Go the F**k to Sleep is the viral success story of the publishing world, leaping on to the best seller lists before it was even released. Now Play School veteran Noni Halzlehurst has joined actor Samuel L. Jackson in reading a version of the profanity-laden bedtime story.
Written by Adam Mansbach, the book was inspired by the author's daughter Vivien who would take up to two hours to fall asleep as a toddler.
A children's book for adults, the prose matches the repetitive, soothing style of kid's bedtime classics, with an M-rated twist.
Mansbach says the book is somewhat of a response to the PC world of parenting books, saying that sleep frustrations "are not permissible to talk about. We're not completely honest because we don't want to be bad parents."
Noni Hazlehurst is a parent of two. She told Text Publishing that, "it’s impossible to understand this hilarious book’s appeal unless you’ve experienced the utter desperation of a parent whose child won’t sleep. Most of us suffer in silence, unwilling to admit our helplessness."
"Hopefully this will encourage parents to be honest about the problem, find solace in the fact that they’re not alone and start swapping ideas that might work."
Text publishing has launched an Australian version of the book.
