Georgie on a recent trip to Bangladesh with UNICEF
Georgie Parker is one of Australia's best known and loved actors. A wife, mother and talented singer, UNICEF Ambassador Georgie is also a regular presenter on Play School and was nominated at the 2009 Aria's for Best Children's Album.
Georgie, how many children do you have and what ages/sex are they?
I have one 9 year old daughter.
What surprised you the most about becoming a mother?
That no one can really prepare you for what it is like.
What is the hardest element of being a working mother?
I think it’s a common theme - trying to balance everything. Making sure that you get quality work done and making sure it doesn’t impact spending enough quality time with your family.
What do you think about 'me time'? Do you manage to get it and what do you like to do?
I like to exercise but otherwise ‘me time’ for me is family time. That is my way of replenishing my energy.
Logistically, how have you managed your work with all the travelling you do with childcare/schooling?
With the help of an astonishing husband!
We’d love to hear more about the UNICEF project you’re working on
I am working on an amazing initiative called the Vicks Road to Relief to help protect children in developing countries from pneumonia. Almost 2 million children die from pneumonia each year, mainly in developing countries even though it is preventable.
This winter, one Vicks pack = one immunisation, every specially marked Vicks product purchased will fund a donation to UNICEF for the immunisation of one child in a developing country. It is an amazingly simple initiative that can make an enormous difference.
You’ve witnessed the impact of the immunisations first hand, what was that like?
It made me realise how much we take immunisation, and the ease with which we can protect our children from contagious disease for granted. It also made me conscious of how hard it is for people in countries like Bangladesh to access even basic healthcare, including immunisations, without the help of programs like the Vicks Road to Relief.
What can EB mums do to help with the UNICEF project?
Look after their families with Vicks this winter. Each and every specially marked Vicks product purchased will fund a donation of an immunisation of a child – it’s that simple. www.vicksroadtorelief.com
Georgie you’re involved in a vast range of very different projects, what are the qualities most important to you you’d like to pass onto your children?
Humour, hard work, nurture your friendships and always remember to have fun.
What is the nicest thing about motherhood?
That I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to be one.
Georgie, a question all mums must face - what are you feeding your
children for dinner tonight?
Spaghetti Bolognaise. I am not much of a cook but I made it this morning and am so proud. I can’t wait for dinner!
Australians around the country can do their bit by getting involved in an amazing new initiative by Vicks to help UNICEF which is being led by actress and mother Georgie Parker. Learn more about Vicks Road to relief Immunisation project here.
