It’s not your usual home movie: it features stunt people, a choreographed martial arts fight, and a green screen. Then there’s the fact that the star is a one-year-old boy … who’s fighting a stuffed dragon.
The movie is called Dragon Baby, and the toddler, named Romeo, is the son of Canadian filmmaker Patrick Boivin. Boivin says he knew he wanted to a special film with his son after making a similar movie, Iron Baby, with his daughter Marguerite in 2010.
Appearing on Today in the US this week, Boivin said that creating the 67-second clip was “a pretty long process”.
“We started by creating costumes, small ones and large ones, and then I shot two stuntmen, fighting and doing the kung fu moves,” Boivin said.
“And then I shot my kid … and I simply took the shoulders and the head and applied it over the [stuntman].”
But the most difficult part of it all, he said, was getting Romeo to cooperate.
“That was the hardest piece of all this,” he said, laughing.
Since first being placed on YouTube on November 2, the video has been viewed almost 20,696,000 times. It has also been commented on more than 12,000 times.
The popularity has surprised the filmmaker, who told Today, “I was not expecting 20 million [views] in a week, that’s for sure".
