Tell us about your business?
Rock-A-Bye Baby Hire is a Sydney based baby and nursery equipment hire service, offering a wide range of baby and children’s products for hire, both for families at home and inbound travellers from interstate and overseas.
Why did you start your business?
Initially it was because of my own and the experiences of a few friends who had hired baby products while visiting me and were disappointed with the quality and service they received. I saw a gap in the market for a company who could provide exceptional products along with an exceptional service experience for families.
Has starting your own business lived up to expectations?
Absolutely. I have been overwhelmed by how motivating and enjoyable it is to work for myself. It is very much a learn as you go, stay right on the tips of your toes experience in the initial stages, but I’ve got all my processes and systems in place now to make (most) days smooth sailing.
What have you enjoyed most about running your own business?
The marketing aspect has been fascinating, particularly learning about social media and how to use those mediums to the advantage of the business.
What is the biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge is managing my stock purchasing – I feel like a kid in a lolly shop and want to buy the newest and best of everything!
Do you have any children – what are their names/ages?
I have one little girl, my daughter Ava who is now 7.
How do you manage to juggle the running of your business with family?
I try and set time limits on the number of hours I work each day and I do try and avoid working Sundays but it can be inevitable in this business.
What is the hardest thing about being a working mother?
Coordinating customers’ needs and school hours can be challenging but we’re managing so far.
What do you think about ‘me’ time? And do you manage to fit some in?
I definitely have me time. I go to the gym a number of days a week which I really enjoy, I have a few hobbies and I volunteer both at the school and with a women’s organisation. All those activities give me a break both from the business and from family and just let me be myself again, even for an hour.
Have you ever thought about giving it up?
Not really no.
Do you have a favourite networking opportunity or event?
The internet is my best marketing tool at the moment.
Do you have any advice for someone starting their own business?
Go for it. Sometimes, you just need to jump in with both feet and just do it. And don’t listen to negativity – if you’re certain that your idea is marketable, go right ahead and start.
