Why did you start your business?

My background is in high end fashion design. I have always loved designing beautiful but wearable clothing. When my son was born I realised there was a gap in the marketplace for funky children’s wear. My son was a little wriggler who would always get out of his swaddle so I put my thinking cap on and came up with a better solution – The Wrap Me Up.

Has starting your own business lived up to expectations?

Yes absolutely, I am challenged on so many levels. Everyday is different and complex.

What have you enjoyed most about running your own business?

I enjoy the autonomy and the flexibility that I will have as my children get older to pick them up from school and attend their events during school hours, which I could never do if my work hours weren’t flexible.

What is the biggest challenge?

TIME!! Running your own business requires more hours in the day then I ever imagined so life work balance is a difficult thing to manage

Do you have any children – what are their names/ages?

One gorgeous Boy, Elijah who is 3 year old.

How do you manage to juggle the running of your business with family?

I work full steam ahead during work hours, when I come home after work this is special one on one tie with my son and I never work when he is awake. When he goes to sleep that is when I start work again at night time if I need to. I make sure that my work never encroaches on our personal time.

What is the hardest thing about being a working mother?

Having to run the household as well as the business. Some things just do not make it on to the to do list anymore! Since there are not enough hours in the day I try to reduce time in the kitchen cooking meals for everyone! For example I will buy pre-chopped lettuce instead of a whole thing which I need to wash and chop, this saves me ten minutes a day! Every little bit counts.

What do you think about ‘me’ time? And do you manage to fit some in?

That is a hard one! Yes I get some ‘me time’ on the weekends, the deal is my husband gets to surf on sat and Sunday and I get a couple of hours off to do whatever I want. Have you ever thought about giving it up?

Do you have a favourite networking opportunity or event?

Yes I am part of a business entrepreneurs group that I meet with once a month and we brainstorm different issues members are having in their businesses.

Do you have any advice for someone starting their own business?

Yes, do something you have prior experience in. If you have had experience in your line of work you are likely to make less mistakes.

Create processes and systems from day 1. This will help you set up your business in such a way that if someone was to buy it tomorrow then you are not in a fluster. Use an easy accounting package like MYOB and record EVERYTHING.
