Britain's royal family released the first two official photographs of newly born Prince Louis.

London: Britain's royal family released the first two official photographs of newly born Prince Louis on Sunday, one of which shows him being held by his sister Princess Charlotte, aged three.

Louis, who is fifth in line to the British throne, was born on April 23 weighing 8lbs 7oz (3.83 kg).

Both the photographs were taken at Kensington Palace by Kate, the children's mother and wife of Prince William, Queen Elizabeth's grandson.

The first photograph, which the palace said was taken on April 26, shows Louis propped up against a white cushion, wearing a white jumper and trousers.

The second photograph, taken on May 2, Charlotte's third birthday, shows the princess holding her sleeping younger brother affectionately.

The two photographs mark both of the significant landmarks for the Cambridge family: one birth and one birthday. The Duke and Duchess also celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary on April 29th.

Kensington Palace said in a statement: “The Duke and Duchess would like to thank members of the public for their kind messages following the birth of Prince Louis, and for Princess Charlotte’s third birthday.”

Due to a 2013 change in the law, Charlotte is the first British princess for whom the arrival of a younger brother does not mean being demoted down the line of succession.

Palace officials said Louis would not join the rest of his family at the May 19 wedding of his uncle, Prince Harry, to US actress Meghan Markle.

Four days after his birth, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge revealed the name of their third child - Louis Arthur Charles - and wasn't what the bookies predicted.

The three names honour both the Prince's grandfather, Prince Charles, and Louis Mountbatten, the Duke of Edinburgh's mentor who was killed by an IRA bomb in 1979.

Prince George and Prince William both have Louis as middle names, with the announcement confounding bookies and experts who had believed it would not be repeated for William's third baby.

The young prince will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.

Kate was admitted to hospital in the early hours of April, and at 11.01am she gave birth to the prince, weighing 3.8 kilograms.

Less than six hours later, she showed him off to the waiting media, standing next to her husband on the steps of the hospital's Lindo Wing, where, in 2013 and 2015, she introduced Prince George and Princess Charlotte to the world.
