in short DP is in a lot of debt from his user days (been clean for years now) our estimate is around $ 30 000.
this includeds fines and ATO debt.

is there anyway he can take a loan out thats low interest to pay out it all and just pay off the loan??

a mate has offered to do it on his behalf while we dig our selves out (thank god for savings as every white good is breaking in this bloody house as well!!) and to pay him back ( in short he works away, has no debt and mortage payed off, DP has known him since birth) i am really unsure on this option as i believe the final "step/stage" is to deal with it him self.

help please?

I can't see the loan from the friend ending well.

Check with the ATO and SDRO if interest is being charged. Its foolish to get a loan to pay out a debt you're not currently paying interest on.

If you are going to have a debt to someone else I would draw up legal papers about the debts.

Yes, the best option is often rolling all your debt into one payment, its not being able to do this or have the ability to offer a settlement to the company you would have the debts with that can be rather killer with all the combined payments.

IMo, often the best option is to clear the smaller debts that have the larger payments or the ones that are preventing you from getting further credit to combine it all. So you have 1000 and 5000 but you have to pay out at 50 a fortnight so clear the smaller one and then move towards paying down the larger one splitting the money between other debts

Debt consolidation is possible but as an unsecured loan you are looking at a minimum of 12% pa interest. Also, the interest rate you might be offered depends also on stability of employment, other debt commitments, dependants, etc. Can you see a financial counsellor? They have free services from some of the major charities like St Vinnies.

As for borrowing from a friend, it is a feasible option, especially if your friend writes out a contract for your DP and maybe even charges a small amount of interest. That way DP still gets to finish his final steps and be accountable, etc.

With the ATO - contact your accountant.

They can apply for any GIC to be remitted & then all you have to do is contact them & set up a payament arrangement to repay the principal off in 2 years.

Could you try something like debt cutters pretty sure its interest free but you can't borrow any more money til its paid back, sort of like a tempory black listing
