I thought I'd share the pictures of my bathroom now that it's, mostly, finished. And after all the searching not a mint green glass tile in sight. We went with a completely different look in the end.

I am possibly most in love with the massive amount of floor space the new design has created. It feels like the most spacious room in the house all of a sudden. And the wall cabinet - I am amazed how much can be stored in a wall cabinet. And even though my reno guy was initially dubious (he came around) I am really happy with my open shower design with the bifold screen. It's the perfect solution to create more space by using the shower area as open bathroom area during the day and works just beautifully. I can even shower while DD is in the bath, helping her to wash her hair with the flick of a lever to the hand shower. It's just great.
Anyone contemplating an open shower I can highly recommend porcelain floor tiles with a slip rating. I feel really secure on them, even while helping the kids in and out of the bath onto a sometimes wet floor.
Now for my question. Does anyone have suggestions for curtains/blinds in a bathroom? I'd really like to hide the security screen window but it gets quite steamy in there and so I imagine I need something that can handle a fair amount of condensation. I'm actually contemplating putting something together by shortening a fabric style shower curtain.

That looks amazing! Its a design i definitely wouldn't have thought of but I will be putting it forward when we renovate!
I quite like the shower curtain idea! You can get some pretty funky designs online.

Looks amazing!
How about venetian blinds? They are quite a classic look, with good privacy. I'm not sure what they are made of, but IMO they seem to wipe clean and be pretty steam and water resistant.

It looks fabulous! I like your space creating idea with the shower too. I recently updated the cruddy old net curtains in my bathroom with some white venetian blinds, which I like the look of. I keep them half open all the time. They let in the light, but also create a cover from the window.

Venetians is an idea. Any issues with mildew? I imagine they'd be quite fiddly to clean if they do get a build up on them.
I have venetians, never had a mildew problem with them. They are foamwood (not real wood). Just wipe the dust off them from time to time.
I love the shower screen idea too! It folds, not slides?

Yes. If we had a sliding door there'd be a track on the floor to trip on so just a rubber strip along the bottom of the folding panel to stop water flowing back towards the vanity area while the shower is on. The shower head swings out of the way for the door to be folded away. Alternatively it can just be folded 90 degrees up to the shower head. There used to be a solid brick wall in that spot so you can imagine how much lighter and more open the space is now.
I think I might look out for white venetians then. We have wooden ones in the rest of the house so I'm used to them as dust collectors.

It looks great - what a good idea with the folding screens.
You'd be able to blast the dust of the blinds with the shower head, making them easy to clean.

I did white foam wood 50mm venetians in the kitchen and bathroom. They occasionally need cleaning, but no mildew issues.
Foamwood can take the steam - you can't go wooden blinds in that spot - they will rot. A roll up blind will get damp from the steam and won't dry as it is wound up.

what a fantastic design, i love the shower door as well as the whole bathroom.
did you do it yourself or get someone in ?
and if you dont mind me asking roughly how much was it ?
the reason i ask is that we are getting quotes for our bathroom renovations.
thanks

I did the design and the shopping for tiles and fittings myself but we had someone take care of organising the tradies and doing all the work. It's our only bathroom so we wanted to be able to have a really fast turnaround. It went very smoothly and was ready to use again in 2.5 weeks after a complete ripout to a brick and dirt shell.
With regards to price it's a good idea to get a lot of quotes (at least 3 or 4). We had quotes for the work ranging from $9 to $15k. Needless to say we went with the cheaper end of the spectrum and were very very happy with the work done. Barely a hiccough and I didn't have to lift a finger or phone a number. The project manager even arrived each morning with the next tradie to check on the work done and give instructions for that day.
What you spend on fitting it out can obviously vary a lot to. We spent around $2.5k, not including the glass screen and lighting, which was supplied within the original quote.

Love the one piece shower rail and shower head and hand piece. I know - because I've been shopping - how hard it is to find one without bits coming off at different angles, or the rail separate from the hand piece holder etc etc.
As for the window, what about opaque window film? I hate the idea of curtains or blinds; dust, mildew, having to open and shut them...

Yes! I really didn't want to have a separate outlet hole for the hand shower as so many of them seem to. I got really lucky with this one. And it's even water efficient.

You wouldn't know to look at it! It's a ConServ if you are interested.
It's not privacy I'm after. The glass is already opaque. I just want to hide the ugly security grille on the other half of the window (can't see it in those pictures). It's killing my vibe.

we've just re done our bathroom and put a white plantation shutter in - it has really completed the look and it is made of pvc which can just be dusted and wiped down occasionally no issues with moisture etc. All the major companies stock these e.g. Apollo, Wynstan etc

I hadn't thought of plantation shutters. That's a great idea. Sounds really easy to care for. The shutters themselves are bigger than a venetian, aren't they?

That looks wonderful, it looks as though you had a similar bathroom to ours with just a shower and vanity? 1.5m x 2 and a bit..l a hard space to make look spacious and to fit a shower and bath. Great design, I'd never have thought of it or had the guts to do it. Looks wonderful. We went the shower over the bath but I think yours is great!

I agree with the PVC, it has the same look as timber venetians, is lighter and wont sag.

It's a 1.7 x 2.8 so we had a little more room to play with. It actually had a separate shower where the vanity is now and then a wall dividing it from the vanity in the middle of the room. Bath in the same location. The vanity had what they call a 'banjo top' that extended out over the end of the bath. Yuck! So we switched the position of vanity and shower and deleted the wall dividing them. I was just about resigned to putting the shower over whatever small bath I could fit in a 1.7m width when it came to me in a 3am moment. Bing!

I would put a plantation shutter over that window, in white (whatever water-resistant material they use).
The bathroom looks lovely OP, I know a few people who have created a wet area behind a glass screen like you have.

I LOVE what you did!
Wish I'd thought of that myself when renovating ours. We have a full shower next to the bath too, but it would have looked a lot more streamlined to have it set up the way yours is.
Well done!
P.S. You should write it up for a home magazine. Seriously!

Excellent reno! Love the look and the foldable shower screen is a stroke of genius.
Agree that white venetians (wide blade) or planation shutters would look great.
Not sure about plantation shutters, but venetians are easy enough to pull off when we want, hang on the clothes lines and hose down. Presto, totally clean! Hang on line until dry and then put back in room.

Don't suppose I could get away with that with my wood ones, could I? : tongue: I've taken to vacuuming them but they really need a good clean. And I so can't be bothered.

I have white venetians in both our bathrooms. I take them down once or twice a year and give them a squirt with dishwashing liquid and hose them down.
Easy to clean and a nice look in the bathrooms. We live in the tropics so extra humid up here and they do fine. I have timber venetians through the rest of the house and would never put them in the bathroom, much more fiddly to clean.
Your bahroom looks great...

Looks great! Wish I had a bit more space in our ensuite as we are in the middle of having it redone! The plantation shutter could look good in your bathroom.
I just replaced our whole window with wind out awning windows which may work for you too.

Just found this thread whilst searching for bathroom inspiration.
Niggles I just wondered if you are still happy with your shower design, now that you have been using it for awhile. This is a design we could use i think. I've had it drawn to the same layout but planned for a tile wall, instead of a glass screen. The glass screen may be a better option.
Are you finding the water gets contained well enough? I'd be worried I'd have water spraying everywhere!
I have 2mx3m to work with. What is the depth of your shower from the wall?
Well done..looks fab.

Yes, still loving it. Stick with smaller format tiles so the tiler can do a really good job of screeding the floor and use a channel waste. We also have a centre floor waste (it was a practical thing to do with shifting plumbing more than anything but it's turned out to be handy to catch extra water.
The glass screen is about 900mm, hinges halfway and second panel slightly shorter so it folds away nicely. You need to have a showerhead that can swing out of the way or cut the screen so it can swing under the showerhead. Ours swings out the way.
Water doesn't flow past the glass at all but we get splashing all the way to the opposite wall so be aware of that. It's only on the floor and is very minimal. We then use a round carpet mat in front of the vanity with a rubber backing so it can handle the wet really well. We only have 1.7 x 2.8 so you'll even have a bit of extra area to work with.
The other thing to be aware of with your tile choice is to choose something with a decent slip rating since the shower floor becomes the floor next to the bath. We also keep an extra mat on the edge of the bath to pop down when the bath is being used.
Our plumber also reccomended choosing a waterfall shower so the water flow would stay within the glass area but even when I use the second swivel head it hasn't been an issue.
If you really want to maximise space then it's a great design (if I do say so myself

).

Sorry, realised you asked about shower distance from wall. It's 35cm to the centre of the overhead shower from the wall.
