I'm actually suspecting perhaps a new schedule or vaccine attack. I think they are probably rather heavy into the research at this stage, into why they haven't managed to contain this one.

I think we'll be hearing more soon.

If only.

The current vaccine works, the problem is that not enough people have had it, and certainly not enough kids.

A certain proportion of the population needs to be immunized so that there are not enough people to pass it around in the community; our vaccination rates have fallen below this level for whooping cough.

Vaccinating a few parents seems to not help, hence the program is bein abandoned.

For my part, I won't be taking DS2 into crowded public places, kids birthday parties or other potentially 'contagious' situations until he's two months old and had his first jabs. Maybe I'm overly paranoid.... But I see no reason to risk it.

I dont know if the article is legit but not all states run free programs anyway - SA did briefly back in 2010 - was only for parents and grandparents of under 6 month olds on healthcare cards. other parents/grandparents still had to pay for it.

No longer free for any adults in SA now - costs around $35 on script.

Has never been a national program - each state just does/did their own thing.

I dont think there is any question that adult coverage of whooping cough protects babies who come into contact with those adults - the stopping of the programs would of been purely an economic decision, not a question of the vaccine being ineffective.

Although the whooping cough vaccine is not perfect, it is the best defence we have.

I think they are also concerned because of the different strain and that this vaccine isn't containing that version of the virus.
