DH just text me, he is in Phuket for work.
His hotel shook and woke him from nap (he flying out on the red eye tonight). He called work and let them know and let to his co-workers know in Bali.
His bags are packed and he is ready to leave right now.
XXXX stay safe precious XXXX
They expecting 6m wave.
OMG I don't even know where he is staying! he stays in hotels every time he goes to work so I don't even bother finding out where he stays.
I hope everyone in Sumatra and areas affected are all safe and ok

Wow. First I'd heard of it. I hope your DH is OK i-candi.
Looks like the quake has hit right around where the last Indonesian Tsunami was. Couple of hundred miles off Banda Aceh.
At least your DH should have time to move away from the beach.
Here's hoping there is no tsunami.

He has a Bali trip coming up maybe next week??? the week after???? great!
I was going to go on this trip with the kids but decided not to because he had a red eye flight and too much time in Perth (we recently went to Perth when his sister passed so I didn't want to go back right now

). He left on Easter Sunday and not due back until late Friday

I miss him

They are saying that the threat of a tsunami is lower this time as the quake was horizontal rather than vertical. Tourists in resorts told to go to higher ground (or upper hotel floors) just in case.

They are saying the risk of tsunami is low because of the type of quake.

**** me
I just asked DS if he was watching the news and he said why. I said nothing and he asked if it was about the earthquake.
I then said it's ok dad is on the roof of the hotel.....
OM*G !!!!!! why did it slip out, he probably didn't even realise his dad was overseas (he just goes to work IYKWIM). Poor kid he suffers depression and anxiety!! I didn't think until I saw his face!!!! I told him dad said he was having a party and he was only upset because his nap was interrupted.... phew he was happy with that explanation and also I told him that because of the last tsunami everyone is trigger happy and evacuating just in case! he went on playing the computer game with the neighbour...
I'm a first class idiot. Lucky DD didn't hear!

I think you can be reassured they are OK because there are no reports of injuries at the airport. In fact there are no reports of injuries so far (or not on the news sites I checked). By far the most likely scenario is that the phone lines are down or overloaded and they are safe at the airport.

Also I am sure Dfat will be arranging a hotline in the next few hours as being such a tourist zone there will be scores of Aussie in countries affected or on warnings. So check the Dfat (dep of foreign affairs and Trade) website and you will be able to register your parents (or any loved ones details) for matching at the other end.

The mobile phone services in South East Asia are reportedly overloaded - try text instead of calling and try not to panic, there have been no reports of injury.
I am reading Twitter for the latest updates. There are lots of tourists in Thailand tweeting info.

DH is finally in Australia !!!!!!!!! he just rang me

He could only chat quickly and said when the first earthquake hit he was asleep and thought it was his workmates shaking him awake telling him he slept in (lol) woke up and was groggy and was watching everything move in the room and then there was a knock on his door from a work mate telling him they had to get on the roof. The hotel workers were very distressed.
Then the aftershock hit and DH said it was worse than the first!! after that was when they thought there was a bigger risk of a tsunami so everyone had to go to the hotel next door because it was two stories higher!!!
When they could go back to the room the hotel owner organised food for the group. He said they were amazing in getting dinner etc. Owner of the hotel is an Aussie and came and talked to the group. Apparently most hotel staff just disappeared. They ran off with the first quake and never came back, 2004 was still raw with them.
Can't wait to speak to him property and to actually see him
