I am organising a Mad Scientist party for DD in a couple of weeks. I have booked a scientist to take care of the entertainment and am looking for related food ideas, decorations, etc. I have bought some Petrie dishes as I have seen some pretty interesting things done in these with jelly but that's it, that is all I have.

I have found a few ideas via Google, but given they are mostly 4 year olds, I think some of the food ideas would kind of freak them out!

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the chocolate shop Happy Lab online store for ideas. They sell smartie like lollies in test tubes and beakers. It is a little over priced but you could easily replicate them as lab supplies are really cheap online.

Hi try this site it has some good ideas. I remember when my nephew was little my sister did something similar, and we had white science coats that my mum had. Drinks that were in funny shaped bottles. Most of the drinks were just water with added food colouring. Like the website you can make fizzy stuff with water, bi carb and vinegar. Food wise i just remember everything was normal food, ie cup cakes, biscuits but they were bright colours like green. Hope this helps Sounds like it will be so much fun!!!

Oh Dear, now you've got me hooked....I do love a themed party

Here's some ideas for experiments you could do, I always loved that egg experiment.


Acid & Base: Before the science birthday party, boil 1 cup of shredded red cabbage until water is dark. Dilute it with water until medium purple. The purple water will show if something is an acid or a base. If the water turns light green or yellow color (after adding the substance), then the substance is an acid. And if it turns dark green or blue - it is a base.

Divide this liquid solution in several glasses. Have the kids guess what color the water will turn. Add baking soda (turns green), bleach (turns yellow), sprite (turns light purple), etc. Get litmus paper to check the acidity levels.

*Static Electricity: Give each mad scientist party guest a balloon and an empty soda can. Have them blow up their balloons and rub them on their heads.

Put soda can on flat surface, and applying the balloon, see if the can moves. Next, get the kids to stick their balloons on the wall.

Suck the Egg into the Bottle: [/b]First, hard boil an egg. Next, get a glass bottle that has an opening smaller than the egg. (Starbucks' Frappuccino bottle will do the job.) Show the kids that the egg will not go inside the bottle on its own.

Pour boiling water into the bottle. Place the egg back on the opening of the bottle. The air pressure created by the hot water sucks the egg into the bottle.

Love the test tube favors and have found lots of test tubes on eBay so I can make up my own. I have found some kids disposable lab coats also.

Fake glasses? I think you can get them from the birthday favours isle in Woolworths.

Get some dry ice. It will make their drinks smoke and it's perfectly safe. Best drunk through a straw.

Cornflour and water mixture with a little food colouring makes the best slime. Hard when you squeeze it into a ball and then liquifies as you let it go.
