Hi Babystar,
There are two different types of twins, as you know (identical and non-identical or fraternal). Only the non-identical are genetic or run in families. Identical twins are by chance (it's when the egg splits in two) and can happen to anyone.
If you have non-identical twins in yours and your husband's family, it's only your side of the family that would matter as it's the releasing of two eggs at ovulation that is hereditary and you would have inherited this from your mother or grandmother etc.
For example, my grandmother had 3 sets of non-id twins, my mother didn't have any, my sister miscarried twins and my second pregnancy started out as twins, but only one was viable. My ob confirmed that there is a strong non-id twin gene in our family.
